Finis Tempo Trainer Pro

I just got that fancy little device as I've always felt that my turnover frequency isn't very stable. Now I'm asking you peeps here who already have trained with that device which time setting have you been using?

I know that everyone has a slightly different personal turnover frequency but I'll just take that as an input to where to start from.

  • I played with this yesterday. I tried 110 and 107. Although 107 felt like my regular arm turn over, I felt I got more pull out of my stroke when I did the 110. My friend, who used to be my speed (now is faster) uses the 110 for shorter distances like 100,50 and 25 and brings it to 120 for 200, 300+. She lapped me twice.
  • @Stefan.... I tried the Finis and played around with it just under 60 strokes per minute to the mid 70 strokes per minute.... In the end I did not find it to be helpful and finally gave up on it... For grins I looked up my swim test from yesterday .... My Garmin reported 463 strokes x 2 = 926 total strokes in 14:57..... Or 61.7 stokes per minute.

I would say start at 56-58 and then keep bumping it up a couple every few hundred yards until if feels a little too fast.....bring it back down and do some work at that rate.... and then play around with it back on the faster turnover settings to see if you can adapt to it or not...

Little off topic but within what I think your looking for. Check out these sites.

Good site that discusses stroke rates and charts the sweet spot.... Its not a one size fits all.... Some of the greatest swimmers have huge variations in the stroke rate.

  • I agree with Tim... it's not one size fits all, but if you know what you're trying to achieve (higher or lower turnover), the Tempo Trainer can be really useful.
  • After finishing Sheila Taormina's book "Swim Speed Secrets" I found a pretty good timing to start with.
According to Sheila the bandwidth of different stroke timings is much less than most people believe in and lists up 2 full pages of olympic top-swimmers of both genders as a pretty impressive proof for that.

I plan to follow her training instructions for this season and pretty sure I can tell more about the results in about 8-10 weeks.
  • @STefan... looks like a good book.... bought it!
  • Tim, if you swim any faster you're going to have a full wake!

I order this book too, as I have become a convert to the TT....I find it is the best way to keep myself working hard through all the sets and maintaining good form.  If I start to see an increase in SPL or slower 100's, I'm either getting tired (and thus need to refocus and keep pulling) and/or my form is slipping (need to refocus on all the "reminders" in my head one after another until the SPL is back to baseline).  But, after many sets, it becomes impossible....but that's OK, as long as form is good.  Sort of like not getting that last mile repeat quite fast enough.
