Vicki M's macro thread
Hi Rich!
I have been having a great time working through the marathon training plan. I was already getting faster, so much faster in fact that I was not paying attention on one of my runs and tripped over an uneven sidewalk and somehow managed to hit the pavement in a way that I cracked my rib. At least it was impressive with lots of witnesses and some blood. One of the witnesses didn't know what to do so she gave me a band-aid. I can't even claim that I slipped on a patch of ice since I live in southern CA.
I continued to run that day and for several days but the pain was getting bad so I went for an x-ray today. I was doing the marathon because I'm signed-up for my first full ironman this year (IMAZ) and have mostly done shorter races (several olympic and half marathons, one half ironman). About 4 years experience. In my marathon training, the biggest issue (pre-fracture) has been my nutrition which has been getting better after looking at your wiki. I have not registered yet for the marathon but have registered for my half ironman (earlier than the one I put in my plan - end of July instead of mid-August) and of course the full in Nov. The half and full ironman are the races I care about. The full marathon was mainly to get experience doing a long course. The doctor says I can do whatever my pain level will allow but he probably does not mean pushing through a 20 mile run holding my rib. The longest run I've done is 15 miles and longest bike is 56 - I'm also pretty slow. I like your idea of getting faster first so I can finish my long runs and rides faster I'm pretty confident I can ride on my trainer but thinking I should take a break from running and cycling outside for a couple of weeks. It seems like forever but I don't want this rib issue to drag on. The next event I'm signed up for is a metric century charity ride in May.
Since I'm part of EN now, I'm wondering what you suggest given my situation. I sort-of hate to stop the marathon training when I'm so close but the reality is I can do a 26 mile run pretty easily up the coast stopping at the different beaches for water on a beautiful San Diego morning just about any weekend of the year. I don't feel the need to do a formal marathon. What do you think? I would say I'm by far the weakest on the bike. I actually hate it but I used to hate running and now I love it!
Happy to fill out a new raceplan based upon your suggestions - especially since I'm signed up and committed now!
Thanks!

I realize that I need to change plans (different races) and injury. For now, I loaded the bike focus plan which is doable maybe skipping or taking it easy on the runs for now. I really need to learn to love the bike and since I cannot really swim or run at least for a few weeks, so now seems like the perfect time I submitted a new raceplan.
Thanks!
Vicki
