2014 Week #7 RUN THREAD

Are we there yet?  ;-)

Hope everyone is hanging tough and hitting their paces across the week. This week's workouts are even more challenging yet, but I KNOW you can smoke 'em.

Coach's podcast this week addresses how to get through the holidays. I count St. Patty's Day as a definitely challenge to get through. ;-)

Post those workouts and questions and let the team get you through!

  • much green beer to consume yes a problem indeed
  • Did Tuesday's workouts today due to travel.  Got the run done after the bike … now time to rest

  • I have two 48 hour shifts at the firehouse this week (tues/wed and sat/sun) so I will be hacking the wkos big time! No treadmill at the firehouse so runs are out.  I'll drag my bike and trainer up there, but its always hit or miss if I'll get through the wko without catching a call. Did the Wednesday run this morning 3 x 1 mi @ 7:53 and then 10' @ 8:10 for total of 6+miles.  Tomorrow the Tuesday bike, Wednesday the Thursday bike, Thursday the Saturday bike plus the brick run from Tuesday, and Friday will be doing a 10 mile run to stay on pace for a half mary in March.  Bonus...Sat & Sun rest/recovery/stretch

  • Slept in today, then lifted weights for 45 mins, ran 2 miles + speed drills, then swam 1000 ugly yards to start getting ready for tri-season.
  • @Steve - my hubby is a full-time FF too, so I know all too well the juggling you have to do to get your workouts in! He actually just wrote a grant application to the gov't for his department, and they got over $100k for all new fitness equipment. They actually have trainers there to put their bikes on and brand new treadmills. Craziness. I told him he has no excuse now. ;-)

He always jokes about getting off the trainer and hauling a$$ to a scene and trying to not drip sweat on the patients. LOL!

    Hang in there!!!
  • Kori, I feel his pain...thats the worst part, sweating like crazy while on the call!

  • I was gonna do my long run outside today, during one of the promised sun breaks ... which never materialized. At run time, it was 39 and hailing, so I drove the 2 miles to the gym treadmill, and spent 65 minutes doing VO2 intervals, 4 x 200, 2 x 800, 4 x 400. Total of 7.25 miles in 65 minutes. If it's still raining on Wednesday, I;m facing over 2 hours on the treadmill. I'm praying for a break.
  • @Al, probably a good idea not to run in hail!

5.85 easy miles on the TM. Really wanted to open it up but with 2x20 on the schedule tonight I held back.
  • Did my VO2 run Monday evening.

3 x 1 mi (600). Hit them all right around 5:50. I had to quit the extra mileage a little early because of time, which is fine for OS, but maybe not so great for marathon training, so I came back Tuesday morning with four more easy miles.

Monday evening: 8 mi total http://connect.garmin.com/activity/447253466
Tuesday, 4 bonus easy miles. Bike will come Tuesday evening.
  • Hubby advised I go to the gym to run (after another dump of snow last night) since he thought the roads were too messy to run from home. Ran into a friend and chatted a z1 run away. Threw in the hill "strides" at the very end. Um. Yeah. Hello glutes. LOL.

Really REALLY looking forward to hitting the metro park cleared path and warmer temps tomorrow to be out of doors. image
  • 30' For me today nothing flashy, just getting in a run.
  • Aaargh, the travails of travel … Thanks to 'thundersnow' (I learned a new word yesterday!), it took me 8 ½ hours to drive from CT to ME yesterday. I was pretty fried by the time I arrived, and just about every restaurant and bar in town was shut down. We somehow managed to find a pizza delivery service that was open, and a bar that was willing to sell us two beers …. it was midnight by the time I got to bed. Sub-optimal prep for today's run. So I just took it easy and ran three z2 miles on the hotel treadmill. Weather permitting, I'll be home tonight. I am debating whether to do today's run tomorrow or stick with the VO2s for tomorrow. Due to upcoming work travel, I'll be bike testing on Sunday instead of Monday, so I'm not wild about doing VO2s tomorrow. My plan would be to take Friday off, easy swim on Saturday and then bike test on Sunday. Any thoughts?

IMO, the final set of VO2 intervals (think of it as your "graduation" exercise for the first half of OS) will not impact at all you ability to BOOM the test on Sunday. You could stick in an easy run on Friday, too, if you want. Besides, you'll feel so accomplished after those 10 intervals ...

  • Today was the long run I should have done two days ago - at last, no rain, some sun, 42 F. Marathon hack would have me doing 16 miles, with "main set" of 3 mi @ MP, 3 mi @ HMP, 3 mi @ LRP, then finish with 2 @ TP or "best possible". Best possible turned out to be  resting after finishing 14 miles in 2:04. I hit the MP and HMP efforts fairly closely (8:00, goal 7:50; 7:30, goal 7:30). But at the finish, I was reminded why I don't do stand alone marathons - I hate the training required to do respectable, to say nothing of well. Mixing this stuff in with the OS bike workouts takes a toll on my thing muscles.
  • And, there goes the Outseason!

After missing most of last week with work travel, I was looking forward to this week after skiiing this past weekend. Unfortunately, skiing did not go as planned and I'm now the proud owner of a fractured tibia (albeit not a bad fracture). I'm in a boot for 3 weeks at least, then we shall see where it goes from there. I guess my half marathon in March is gone and Kinetic Half in May is not looking good. Damn!!

Last year was my first year doing tris and I was seeing some serious improvements in my training with the OS Plan. I'm going to try to get on the bike and see how it feels pedaling easy so I can at least do something. Injuries suck!
  • John - not the way you wanted to spend the next two months, for sure. Take the time needed to heal, and then ease your way back up.
  • @Kate, I would ask yourself how you typically feel on Saturday's bike ride after Thursday's V02 stuff. If you typically feel good, you would probably be ok because you'd actually be getting another day of rest.

    @Al, nice run!

@John, sorry to hear that, heal up fast.

I did the run before work today. 8.6 miles on the TM with 4 X 1 @ Z4 pace. I felt really strong physically and a lot better mentally than I did during last night's bike wko. I'm going to keep trying to get all of my sleep to make it into test week well prepared.
  • John - total bummer. I hope you recover quickly.

Today - 45 mins weight lifting in the morning and 7 mile run in the evening. Warm! I did 9 x Millport (.43 mile loop) and was feeling it by the last two repeats. Mile repeats scheduled for Saturday ... as in 9.3 x 1 mile with no rest interval.
  • Ran outside today, while we we had exactly one temperate day. Another CRAP day tomorrow. It was in the low-mid 40s and foggy, with snow all over the grass, but the walks were clear (except for all the water puddles and sand). I ran laps around my moderate rolling 3 mile route. Not sure what it was...being outside? just an off day? not sure... but I didn't really have it. Everything was kind of an uncoordinated feeling struggle.

13 miles total. 6 miles around 8:00. 7 miles averaging about 6:55. The rolling-ness of the course makes the mile-to-mile comparison a bit uneven. The RPE was 5=10 beats per minute higher than the HR reflects. Hopefully just an off day or a low because of this cold I'm cycling through.

@John - major bummer. I wish you the luck I'e had with coming back strong after a minor/moderate injury.
  • Did the complete Brick Run with strides last night after the 2X18 bike wko.   Considering what a struggle the bike was happy to get it done. Was a little sore today (combo of core challenge and wko) and right hamstring tender so did a little longer warm up and then completed the 3X1's at target pace an got some z2/z3 time in after.
  • Good run this AM. 4x1mi(5')@ z4 -- All at 6:15. Total 7.5mi in 57'. Looking forward to the upcoming run test.
  • Got to run OUTSIDE yesterday and while it was windy, it was gorgeous and 45ish!!!

Legs felt a bit heavy to start, but I neg. split the repeats ending with some z2/3.

Unlike last weeks TH run, I felt really good (well, TH good lol) on each mile, my hr stayed where I expected it to and while it was not flat like the mill, I was still able to gain speed each mile. Pleased. Oh what a difference +30 degrees can make!

It was awesome to see so many folks at the metro park enjoying the mini weather break...walking dogs, running and quite a few cyclists! image

@John, heal up quickly!!! This is why I am such a boring girl during OS!

@William, I DREAM of your cadence graph! image Glad you got outside, but sorry it was a meh feeling run for you. Hopefully your CRAP day today isn't too much CRAP. (We've got freezing rain on tap here in MI. CRAP!)

Repeating what I said in other thread: You've been doing some SERIOUS miles/efforts. I suspect you need a day (or two) off. Cold symptoms plus the RPE/HR discconect are warning signs. Take a rest day. Marathon is still 8 weeks away, don't peak too soon or lose a week to over-training.

  • Thanks Al. I accidentally posted in the wrong week and didn't see how to delete. The cold isn't a new thing...there's one going around...it's been mild and taking its course. Just to reassure. I was more concerned about the RPE/HR disconnect. Did a few easy miles this morning (http://connect.garmin.com/activity/448263331). The disconnect wasn't there this morning, but it was back to the usual "Thursday morning early 'easy' run doesn't feel that easy". I'll spin a bit this evening, but Friday is a scheduled completely off day.

My hard days are Monday (interval), Wednesday (tempo), and Saturday (long). This Saturday's "long" isn't all that long, and if the MP isn't feeling right, I'll just put in the time. On Sunday, I usually do an easy brick (~50 min ~85% on bike and ~5 miles easy on treadmill), and I won't hesitate to drop the run or take the day off if Saturday isn't better.  I think I've seen you say that every OS you end up taking a few days break somewhere, and that's been my experience too (at least just putting in the time, instead of the intervals)....so I'm sensitive to that.

I tend to think the atmosphere of the indoor track that I've been stuck in for a month is just so "ideal" that I'm going to have to get used to the great crappy outdoors again...but outdoors is just ridiculously crappy these days. The whole town is shutting down right now because of a blizzard coming in right now that's starting as freezing rain. So much for 45 and relatively clear or foggy.

  • @ William, when I'm sick the HR/RPE disconnect is the biggest manifestation for me.
  • 5.85 EZ miles on the TM this morning including the strides. A little stiff to start out but felt really good by the end.
  • I got in a couple runs over the last two day.  30' each with some TP effort on Wednesday.
  • Did wednesday's run  today with my 2 days adjusted EN schedule...saw a new "movement therapy" guy on Monday and he worked on my hip and gave me some new exercises as homework...happy to say that my "improving" running form did not break down over the 3x1 miles (about double what I could do before), or really, the run overall. I don't know if it was him, improved focus, or what, but I'm happy!
  • Hacked the plan and added a long run today to stay on track for a half mary in March.  Blue sky, sunshine, and 57 degrees made for a perfect day  WU: 1 mi @ 9:44, MS: 3 mi @ 7:56, 7:59, 7:49, Sweet Spot: 5 mi @ 8:31, 8:34, 8:29, 8:21, 8:31, CD: 1 mi @ 10:16

  • Epic fail today. Gasparilla 15K in 1:19:45 for 8:30 mile average per my Garmin. Yellow flag weather with starting temp at 70 degrees, 100% humidity and 0-2 mph light breeze. In other words, a stifling sweatfest. 1 day rest was insufficient and I blew up about 4 miles in. The 8 mile pace group went by me at 5.5 miles and I jogged the rest of the way (but it did not feel like a jog) to end up with the 8:30 avg. I have a 5K race next Saturday for my run test and will take 2 easy days before it.
