Workouts Week of Feb 17

OK,

So today I dropped into the Intermediate HIM plan at 8 weeks out from my race.  You would think that after swim camp the 2600 yd swim would not have been too bad and you would be WRONG.  Swimming still seems to be my weakest link but I keep plugging away. Garmin connect gave an error this AM saying it was down for maintenance so you will have to take my word on how slow I swim for now.  Tomorrow is a test day on the HIM plan but I just tested in the OS and will use one of Coaches shiny new Trainer Road workouts as a fill in.

Where are all of the other spring folks in their training plans?

  • Today I did HIM intermediate wk 11 workout. No Joy on the intervals but got it all done except for the last 2 minutes of cool down when the dog decided to go crazy barking.

THEN I noticed that the plan had bike workout on Tuesday in addition to the test options. Oops.
    Short run this PM.
  • So,
I don't know where else to post my training updates for my Spring HIM but in this forum so i am going to keep on like someone else is out there. image
Just act like you know what you are doing and folks will believe you, Right?

Wednesday Swim went well 2600 yards after working with my trainer for 30 min. Still slow but not quite AS slow.

Thursday Run ended up being on Friday morning. Since I dropped into the HIM plan on a test week and I had just tested, I looked back to week 11 and did the long run from that Thursday. If you look at my Garmin track you will see that the start and the finish are about 1.5 miles apart. That is what happens when one hits the wrong button to start the Garmin. So my 10 mile run is now an 8.5 mile run.

Oh well. Pacing was pretty good (for me). I got new paces courtesy of my 5K time last Sat and i was able to hold my paces pretty well and do the negative split. My HR was higher than Z3 at the end but I was going faster than my Z3 pace too.

Out of town this weekend but taking my bike and I have a pool where i am going to be so hopefully I will be able to stay on the plan.
  • Ha Ralph, I'll join you with posting updates.

Here's my weekly update: I'm finally over the flu this week after 3 weeks at 50%-75% effectiveness.  I got back in the pool for the first time in a month yesterday.  I've learned from years of swimming that pool + respiratory issues just.  don't.  mix.  So that was the last to get added back to the program.  I also had a bad crash (bad for the bike, not for me) during last Saturday's race rehearsal, so I'm stuck on my PM-less road bike until my new crash replacement frame comes through.  So................despite all of that adversity, I actually had a pretty good week of (mostly running) workouts.  The highlight was Thursday's run, 11 miles at a 9:40 pace.

Today, I'll do ISLAGIATT on the trainer along with the run (no more riding in the rain for me until after IM Cali) and tomorrow I'll do Blender.  Fun times in the pain cave!

  • @Rich Nice run. Sounds like you adapted and overcame. You seem to have been at this about the same amount of time that I have. My first sprint was in 2011. Oceanside is on Mar 29th so you are about 3 weeks ahead of me in the HIM schedule. sounds like you are right on course to have a great race.

My Sat started off great because it was nice out and I was going to go on my first outdoor ride in 2 months. I am out of town for work but brought my bike. I went to check the front wheel and broke off the skewer. No LBS in this town so I humped it up the road 65 miles to the nearest shop to get some spares. After work, I got in a shortened ride of 2.5 hours but no run. Today I am shooting for another 3 hours or so on the bike and then a run.

Yesterdays ride was out in the country so far that I could hear banjo music almost the whole way.
  • Ralph, your 1/2 is really early. I am dropping into this forum later for the Grand Rapids HIM on 8 Jun. If this forum doesn't pick up, then I recommend you join the Florida 70.3 forum since it is only a week earlier than yours. Last year I did IM Sweden but shared workouts in the IMMT forum for accountability since those races were on the same weekend and there were a boatload of ENrs doing Mont Tremblant. The timing is more important than the actual race you are doing.
  • @ Paul THanks, that is a great tip. April is kind of early and then I havea huge gap till October. Gonna have to figure out what to do with that...

Today's bike was OK but it seemed harder after yesterday. 35 miles on the bike then a 4 mile run. Hit my run interval paces much better than I anticipated.
