How to send private messages?

I've noticed that some members have the ability to receive messages, while the majority don't (not sure if I can receive messages either).  Is there a reason some can't receive private messages?  I'd like to connect with some locals in my area and would rather not post to a thread in order to get it done

     OK - rookie mistake, my bad.  See that ironmancona asked the same question in this forum (under PM's) about a month ago.  But, would be a nice feature to be able to look up members in the message center.  Just a thought.
