Strained back recovery-ready to start training again

Coach Patrick,

I hope you are well. I sent you an email about a week ago which you may not have seen. I was in OS week 4 Beginner. The Wednesday after we spoke on a Monday I had suffered a severe back strain from-you guessed it --shoveling the snow. I saw my orthopedic doctor-no disc issues and engaged in physcial therapy a couple of times per week since the injury. ( Also have slight tear in my muscle in my shoulder-unrelated) My doctor who has run marathons and has done IM said once my back is feeling ok I am good to go. Over this time I definitely started to improve. The strain in my lower back also was in an area  that I was having issues from cycling on my indoor trainer. I basically did no training for 2 1/2 weeks. I had a new bike fit this Saturday and had some adjustments made to the stem of my bike and adjustments to my seat. Feels better. I had an 1 hour swim lesson this Saturday with Thea , cycled very lightly last week for about 15 minutes. Today I ran 2.6 miles at a 9:30 minute pace. Thankfully, I am feeling ok and believe  that I can start my training again in earnest. Where do you believe I should pick up my training. I would like to ease back into it this coming week. If you have qustions please feel free to call me as well.

Thanks much,

Howard

  • Howard, sorry the email is the last place you want to reach out to me. Here or a PM on the site (at the top) is best...or my phone. I'd like you to keep the OS where it is but do it for time this week, not intensity...let's see how that goes...if it all works out, you'll have a week to get back into it and we can then have you back on track!
