George Jordan's Get Out of Running Jail Micro Thread

Coach P,

I have read through many of the Plantar Fasciitis and Return to Running Injury Threads and am still a bit lost about what to do.  Next week I finish 3 solid weeks of running jail for PF, ice, night splint, and more ice. I am currently in week 14 of the intermediate HIM plan and if all goes well I will begin my return phase next week while on vacation in Jamaica, that's the good news.  My real conundrum is how do I get ready to run the Shamrock Half Marathon in 2 weeks, White Lake Half Irondistance Tri in 6 weeks, and IMCDA in Jun?  I have been doing water running and plan to start the elliptical tonight but the rehab plans all look like 4-8 weeks to return to a legit run so I am considering bailing out of Shamrock and White Lake and focusing on IMCDA.  Thanks for your advice?

  • As you are noting, NOT running is only half the battle. image I would suggest no half marathon, but we can keep white lake on the calendar for right now. This week is all elliptical running with other runs in the water. Next week is the "brick" runs (Wed / Sat) as real runs but only 15 minutes each...everything else on the elliptical. Week after next is 4 x 15' runs (start of actual runs, before elliptical) and bricks.

You will have to keep up with the self care stuff in the meantime...no intensity on the actual runs...if it was nice I'd have you on a good soft surface like a track for your initial runs...but a treadmill could work too...what say you?
  • I just tried the elliptical last night and could only manage 5 minutes before the pain returned.  Tonight I'll try taping my foot and see how that goes. The tape will be a must for the treadmill. No worries about Shamrock.  I've already paid so I'll go get my t-shirt (I have no shame:)).

How about the RR this week?  I can do the swim and bike and elliptical?  The logistics to get a water run in after the bike won't work this week.

  • I would do the swim and bike this weekend...elliptical only if no pain. Let me know what the taping does...fingers crossed for you!
  • Yep, that's what I did. Swim in am then bike in the afternoon. Then about 10 min on the elliptical. No pain the the tape. I followed the elliptical with some polymetrics - no heel pain as long as I keep the tape on. Although the tape causes considerable discomfort along the lateral margin of my fifth toe. Mole skin and every other product I've tried over the counter provides no significant relief. Perhaps I post the to the forums for other ideas.
  • @george bust out the iphone and take lots of pictures so we can get some input!!!
