Dusty's hijacked 2014 race season...

Okay, seeking advice on how to handle CDA in June.  My wife and I separated this past week so my ability to get long rides every other weekend are limited at best.  I am going to have the kids every other weekend so no training those weekends.  In the grand scheme of things CDA is minimal in importance.  I have already paid the race entry fee, airline tickets, and lodging (no refunds) so only cost will be for the actually travel/food expenses...  Should I bail on the race, perhaps move it via transfer to a later season half iron?  I haven't been able to do anything for the past week, hoping to run and get back in the saddle for stress relief purposes next week.  Should I race CDA or just count it as a casualty of the divorce?

Thanks....

  • @Dusty. So sorry to hear about your personal situation. In terms of training, I bet you can still make it work if you focus on trainer rides during those weekends when you have the kids (not sure what age, but maybe late night / early am is a possibility for you to get into the pain cave?). On the weekends without the kids, you can get in the prescribed long rides on both days and it would think you'd be able to finish at least.

Also, coach Rich would be able to give you feedback on this in the Macro thread.

    Good luck!
  • Sorry Dusty -- just realized this WAS in the macro forum -- d'oh! Will let Rich comment further...
  • Hey Dusty,

So sorry to hear about your situation.

From a coach-y coach-y training perspective, you can always make that work. There are many workarounds you can use to still build your IM fitness within your constraints.

The bigger question is if IM, and the training associated with it, is the right call for you given your personal circumstance for the next several months. Only you can answer that...but I say that IM will always be there.

FYI, I qualified for Kona with a 10:05 at IMWI on the back of a divorce. We both worked from home and continued to live together during the 6mo clock ticking exercise in CA. Somehow I scored the futon mattress on the floor in the livingroom while she kept the master bedroom...but I trained about 3hrs every day, and 12+ on the weekends, just to get out of the fookin' house.
