Hell of Hunterdon 3-22-14

Who is in for the HOH?  I've never done it before and had some questions.  I know road bike with 25mm tires some gravel sections and hills.  They say it's not a race but I assume a lot of roadies with lots of caffeine.  How does this differ from the century type rides I've done? Any other tips?

  • I'm in as it was a way to finally visit some college friends who live in south Jersey. I read what you read and just ordered my 25 mm tires. From what I've heard, find a group and hand on!!
  • My son Sean and I are in....not many long rides for me yet so I'll be just cruising for fun....I bought some 28 mm tires for the road bike ....we'll look for u @ the start
  • Check with John Withrow...he has done it before.
  • Since you live in the flat land it is a challenge with short hills lots of them. Lots of dirt, gravel, rocks and pot holes with some roads paved. Last year they sent out 3 waves about 3-5 min apart. Be as aggressive as you want or lay back and enjoy the ride and scenery. There are 2 stops along the way 1st has food 2nd only has fluid.
It was a challenge for me last year going into it with about a month of outside riding in the flat land. I was with some roadies who didn't want to finish the race and bailed on the 2nd stop and they just stopped to much for my liking.
This year I was not able to get in since it sold out so fast.

    Lastly, use tire liners too.
  • This will be my 3rd year riding HoH.

Pacing can be aggressive if trying to hang on to groups but you don't have to do that, you can just ride your own pace. This ride is more fun with a group though.

Weather can be a factor. Two years ago it rained all day with temp averages in the high 30's.

The gravel sections can be technical especially if wet. There is also a bridge crossing that is across a metal grate bridge that got sketchy when wet but last year it was fine, so again weather is important.

Bring some tubes, they have sag support but you could be waiting for a while so stay self supported.

It's a challenging great ride, you will have a blast.

Post here or pm me if you have other questions.
  • I've done it for the last 2 yrs. Awesome ride, tons of fun. I use road bike with 25mm Gatorskins. Carry extra tubes and CO2, etc. The dirt sections are technical, but fast downhill and tough uphill.

I usually try to hang onto the front group (who treat it like a race) as long as I can. Once I eventually get dropped on some climb, I rest a little while cruising along until the leaders of the second wave catch me, then I hold on to them until I get dropped. Lather, rinse, repeat. There are a lot of little groups that form and reform. Some are just making a chill ride of it and others race up every hill. Usually "most" groups will stop at the aid stations to take a leak, and get refill the bottles and grab something quick to eat then everyone will head off together again after like 5 mins.

It's fun to go with people you know, but every yr I have done it I had good intentions to ride with my friends. We got separated within the first 15 mins and met for beers 4 hours later. Ask away if you want any other specific details.

I'll be doing it again this yr, probably wearing my EN bike kit.

  • Being this is my first time and the new email from HOH just said new, tire shredding gravel.....Does that mean that the 25 mm Conti 4000s tires that I have are a bad idea? Should I go with something more bullet proof?
  • You're probably ok with the GP400s, but I'm swapping the 23mm GP4000s that are currently on my wheels and putting back on my 25 mm Gatorskins. Unlike a triathlon, rolling resistance is less important than slightly better flat protection at the HoH.
  • Don't know why I'm stressing out about this, but should I take the PT wheel off the tribike, change the tire and cassette in order to use on the roadie at HOH? I have to change the tire anyway, but if I go without the PT it's just the tire change--not a cassette swap. I know this is easy and takes no time either way....but I can't get it out of my head. The PT wheel would also mean that I'm running a deeper rimmed front with the training PT wheel---is this a roadie no, no? aaaughhhh!!!
  • This is an easy one... Use the PowerTap wheel in the back. BUT also ditch the deep dish front and use a regular old training wheel front wheel. There is no aero advantage of that front wheel in a pack, and you will look like a total Fred and the roads will suck so why take a chance messing up your nice carbon wheel. Put on an 11-28 (or close) cassette I you have one. And dress appropriately. Might be rain and 30‘s in the morning and up to maybe 50 in the afternoon. Perfect miserable conditions for this event! Gonna be awesome...
  • Decided to pull out og the HOH this year. I haven't ridden more then 2 hours and the max has been 80-85% of my old FTP while I recover from a hamsting injury. Reading an old post of coach P riding with the FOP and taking almost 5 hours made me decide this is not gonna be in my best interest. Maybe another year.
  • Rob, we'll have to both get healthy and do this in the future...it's so epic!!!
