Flying start

Hello,

I am racing a sprint triathlon this weekend and I have a decent shot at placing in my age group. I do not currently own triathlon bike shoes nor have I ever done the "flying start" where the shoes are pre clipped on the bike. I could go out and get tri shoes this week and perhaps practice the start a few times, but at this point is it too late?

Thanks!

  • Don't do it. If you want to do it you need a bit of practice or you will end up on a you tube video being "that guy" who fell coming out of T1.
  • x2 what Robert said!
I tried it several times and still almost crashed during my olympic race ... But you could easily do the 50% story meaning get out of your shoes while still riding and leave them clipped on! This one is pretty safe IMHO.
  • I can barely do a flying mount but my flying dismount is awesome

    Just practice first

  • I don't think it's that big a time saver. I did it once and wildflower and cut my big toe open jogging through T1 barefoot with my bike in hand. Then when I jumped on, and looked awesome I am told, I realized my shoes were velcro'ed closed. I had to stop, un-velcro then remount. At the end of the ride the toe of the shoe was red from blood.

I think its just flashy and may save a few seconds if well executed. However, the downside can be massive.....
