Mary R's 2014 OS Run Thread
Coach Patrick,
When I did the 8 week run test, I think I hurt a hamstring...or both of them. Since then, I have a lot of pain when I run and am stiff and very sore after running. I lightened up last week, stretched, stretched, stretched, took a steam and did some yoga. That seemed to help. but tonight after the bike ride, I got on the treadmill for the run portion. and, there was that pain again, high up in the back end. I realize I could not have broken my butt, however that's what it feels good.
What to do? See a chiropractor for some active release or see an ortho? I am not sure what to do or how to proceed. I am so frustrated with myself. I have to figure out how to get past the pain and back to feeling good. The season is just about to ramp up!

I wonder if most of your running has been on the treadmill? They are NOTORIOUS for hamstring tightness "creation" due to the fact you don't really propel yourself forward on a Tmill...you just pull the legs back. IOW, I would be curious what a switch to outdoor running...very short / easy at first, could do for you.
In the meantime, it's over to www.athletestreatingathletes.com for you. Get tot he body map and dial in some Leigh Love for those hamstrings. I wouldn't try running again until Sunday...and even then it would be short.
Let me know re the treadmill diagnosis....
Hi Coach Patrick,
I tried to follow your advice. And, I have been doing most of my running on the TM, though the pain started after an outdoor session. I thought maybe it was because I didn't warm up long enough. Fast forward a few weeks, and, I am still having pain when I run. Due to work travel this past week, I embargoed running and used elliptical and bike but ran yesterday, only a 2 mile run. Soon as I started running, the pain returned. If it just didn't HURT so much. I am going to see a chiro this week to see what can be done. Too early in the season for this craziness.
Thanks for the site. I didn't know about it and it looks like it has a lot of good stuff.

Hi Coach Patrick,
Well, it's official, I started the season a hero and ended a zero...
The pain continued and though I attempted the half Mary on 3/30, the results were dismal. I have been treating with ART and rest, still no running for me. I have been biking, walking, and swimming. So, the question I have is, now that I have flogged myself over and over and over again, how should I modify my workouts so that I will be ready for Lake Placid?
Thanks for your insight,
Mary
My go to model for a no running week looks like this: You swim on Monday Wednesday Friday. You do the Wednesday interval bike on Tuesday and then repeat on Thursday or as close as you can. Then Saturday's long ride remains the same as well as Sunday's ABP ride.
That works out to be four good rides and three good swim training workouts.
Coach Patrick,
I go back to the Dr. Friday and hope to be walk/run (3 min/1 min) this weekend or next week. I will ask about estimated return on Friday.
I rode Monday and tonight so I will ride again Friday and Sunday. That still gives me 4 rides for the week.I swam this morning and will swim again Friday and Saturday.
If i have to, I will follow this plan again next week too. After that I really, really, really hope to be back to running, even if it's modified.
