Perform, honey stinger alternatives and GU

In the uk I am unable to get hold of Perform and honey stinger waffles which are recommended by the EN folks.

I can get hold of high 5 and Belgium honey waffles...both are are close nutritionally...Would do the same job ?
If I do decide to import some stingers then what's the best flavour to get?

Also is the recommended GU gel is the salted caramel version (as it has more sodium)
Thanks for the clarifications before I pull the trigger on my nutritional needs!

  • Perform, yes it would be good to try it since its the drink offered on the course. But Stinger waffles, while I love them and they're convenient, nothing magical about them, if you find a close alternative locally and it sits well during long rides use it. Flavour wise, I love the original and the lemon. Its more important though that you like it, so if buying try several flavours.

GU, salted caramel is a good dessert like gel, a tad too sweet for me, peanut butter is also a good one, that said I rarely use gels, I prefer stinger chews, nutrition in smaller doses. My husband bought some Honey stinger gels this week and the original flavour is like chugging down honey (if you like honey). They have about 50 mg sodium.

Stick with what is easily available for you locally so you can experiment to see what sits well and what tastes you hate etc. I think the coaches recommend Power bars as the best thing on the bike, next to a liquid only fueling strategy.
  • Thanks anu!
Experimented with home made brownies and flapjacks last year with varing success.
This year planning on using high5 (on course) , supplemented with salt sticks, bananas, clif bars, clif shot blocks and honey waffles for the bike leg. Will get some of the GU desserts and see how I get on with them. I think having some Variety for the bike is important for when the body refuses to munch on another damn flapjack!!! I have even read of folks having bacon sarnies and crisps on the bike
