PowerTap Communications issue
I have two wheels with PTs built in, a HED Belgium & a Zipp 808. My head unit is a Garmin 510 and I am also using trainer road.
for the last at least 6 weeks i have seen the data stop coming into the Garmin and the Garmin going into auto pause mode for 5-15 seconds with no interruption on Trainer Road. I assumed this was a battery issue and I changed out the battery in the PT. Still having same issue.
Yesterday i did a 17 minute warmup and less than a minute into my first FTP interval, the Garmin & Trainer Road stopped picking up the PT. quick thinking had me running downstairs for the tri bike (which i should have been switching too anyways) and throwing that on the trainer with the 808 PT, and resuming my workout.
In a 2:15 workout I saw this other PT (the Zipp) mis-communicate with the Garmin only and saw the autopause come up for a few seconds
so, what experience do others have with this? and what do we think might be the culprit, I am going to test the HED later now that it should have powered off from inactivity and see if Trainer Road and the Garmin pick it up again..
any thoughts as to what is happening or not happening?

Hi Scott,
I couldn't say with any authority if our two issues are related, but your mention of two PTs in the house strikes a chord. My husband and I both have PTs and every so often, completely randomly, mine will drop when he is using his. Usually it drops for 10 – 15’ and then resumes just fine. We contacted Garmin to see if there was any way to isolate the units and the best they came up with was to keep them further apart – not very helpful. And yes, they are paired correctly. In any event, if it is indeed the two PT issue for you as well perhaps you have the option of keeping them more isolated? Since you “ran downstairs” I think they may have been pretty far apart to begin with but thought I’d just throw that out there just in case.
Good luck!
Also trainer road was never paired to the 808.
