Change in plans

After much thought, I have pulled out of Rev3 Quassy and Timberman for 2014. I have been training throughout the Nov OS and staying reasonably focused in the GF, now week 5. Last July, my husband was diagnosed with a terminal illness. Not what anyone expects at 55 after years of marathons and good health. After contemplating giving up on my goal to complete my first 70.3, we decided as a family that completion would be "our" goal. Timberman 70.3 was a success for us all. Chemotherapy was working then and despite terrible side effects, my husband was there at the finish with our three girls. Seven months later, it is a different story. We are all so grateful for these past months but the choice of a 3-4 hour workout with the prep and recovery time on either end or time with Phil is an easy choice. I can commit to an hour or two per day of training and need to do this for my mental health. Without a race to aim for what plan do you recommend? I can fill out a new season plan but with life so out of control I have no idea what I will do and will probably sign up for local races a week or two in advance depending on how things are at home. In the daily chaos and sadness I cannot tell you how nice it is to see the familiar training plan each day...it is the little part of the day that I can control. Sprints will be easy to do on the fly. Other races will hinge on how things go medically. As an oncologist for my day job, I am acutely aware of how fragile life is and how all the planning we do can come unravelled in a moments notice. So...how do I tread water for a season? Thanks.

  • Hi Terry,

So sorry to hear about your situation!

The Run Focus plan would be a good solution for you:

    • Just do Weeks 2-5 and repeat as necessary. 1 and 6 are testing weeks but you don't need to test...though I suppose you could just ignore the tests in wk6.
    • It's our lowest volume plan and the runs are short and sweet: very easy to bang out when you have 30-45'.
    • And the cycling is low volume too and can be done on a trainer or just a short ride outside.

Good luck and please let us know if you need anything!
