AWA... Membership has its privileges?
I just got this email from Liz at the WTC. Based on how the WTC weighs how many races you do per year in their AWA process, it looks like they have created a little frequent flyer perk program. Feels like the emails I get from Delta Airlines.
"Hello Everyone!
First, congratulations once again on achieving All World Athlete (AWA) status with IRONMAN in 2013! There are 392 of you stepping up to the start line on March 29th!
At the end of this month you will receive a letter from our CEO, Andrew Messick updating you on why it’s cool to be an AWA and what you kind of special treatment you can expect to receive at our race venues. There will also be a pretty nifty little gift and a metallic bike sticker (or car sticker if you are afraid of having too much weight on your bike) that denotes your AWA status.
On site in Oceanside we are offering fast track Athlete Check-in for AWA’s. Your Bib will also have your AWA status shown. When you get to Athlete Check-in look for the AWA sign that allows you to cut the line and hopefully save you time as you prepare for your race on Saturday.
For those of you who are AWA Gold, you will be offered early entry to the race of your choice (some exclusions apply – we will be sending you a full list at the end of the month) in 2015. As we begin to open races this year, you should be thinking about which race you would like to receive your early entry benefit too and letting us know at agr@ironman.com.
If you have any questions about your AWA status – like how the heck did I become one – please swing by the TriClub check-in table in EXPO – next to the IRONKIDS registration tent and I would be happy to answer any questions you may have and offer suggestions for how you might improve your AWA status in 2014!
See you in Oceanside!
Liz

If they figure out a way to co-brand this with SPG points, I'm officially sunk. Nights+Flights+Races would make me a room night accumulating fool.
This page, and the links on it in the menu at the top provide a lot of insight into the program. Basically, points are awarded for you AG placement, and your top three races count. Someone who only does one WTC race finishes in the top 5 might actually be "beaten" in the rankings by someone who does three races, consistently finishing somewhat lower down. So it's not all about being fast, it's also, as Dino implies, a frequent flier rewards program.

congrats to those that have this status!
