Wrist Heart Rate Monitor

Does anyone have any experience with a wrist/watch heart rate monitor (HRM)?  I haven't raced with a HRM for a few years but find myself needing one now that I'm part of Team EN.  The main reason the chest strap is a problem for me now is I have a pretty slow breath rate so as my workout continues I can't keep the chest strap up when and it falls around my waist, creating a workout where I an constantly trying to adjust the strap.  If I tighten it up, it's tough to breathe because it's pretty tight.   I've seen wrist heart rate monitors on-line, but not sure if they work well.

  • Leslie - Unfortunately, I can't answer your questions. But, if you want some in-depth information about any specific model, check out the product review part of DCRainmaker's website: http://www.dcrainmaker.com/product-reviews. He does great reviews of various products, and has taken a look at some of the wrist-based monitors. If I recall correctly, he was not a fan.
  • John - thanks so much! I love his site - I should have thought of that. Will do for sure.
  • Look on his site, I saw a recent review for one from this year that has a lot of responses on his site. He also has a discount code listed at the bottom for readers of his site .

    Look for a review called

  • Leslie - Ray just posted a review this morning of TomTom's new watch with the optical heart rate monitor. Here it is: http://www.dcrainmaker.com/2014/04/tomtom-cardio.html
  • this is awesome John - thanks so much. I looked at the MIO watch/review and don't really love that your HR doesn't display - meaning I'll have to wear two watches I guess? I'll check out the new Tom tom one as well.
  • You might want to check out the the Adidas Micoach run watch. DC has a great write up on it http://www.dcrainmaker.com/2013/10/initial-thoughts-adidas.html

  • So I purchased the Mio Link - and I have to say it is pretty awesome. For someone who has always struggled with a heart rate monitor strap - from chaffing, to falling down, to feeling restrictive around my chest - this wrist HRM is my new best friend. It is kind of sucky that I have to wear two watches in order to see pace on my run - but the bike is no different as my bike computer picks it up just fine. If anyone has any questions about it - feel free to ask away.
