Water during bike?

Do you guys take in water and sports drinks during training/races (especially on the bike)?

I normally just take sports drinks but heard some other EN team members are taking about 50% straight water and 50% sports drinks.

Comments

  • I use Perform during bikes, runs and sometimes during swims--and I'm losing weight. I also take a recovery drink afterward.
  • I am a 50/50 guy bike and run. During the run I will do one aid station water, then perform, then water, perhaps some cola at the next one. I sort of mix it up.

For bike training, I do 1 bottle of water and 1 bottle of perform. For longer IM workouts I probably go all perform, but I miss the taste of water especially late in the ride if i do that.

Water on your bike is great. You can cool down with it, you can wash up, you can hydrate. Water is also sort of required if you are doing gels, at least for my stomach.....

Please tell me you read this and this before IMCA. If not, I'm going to punch you in the junk during our next ride...

  • Rich... Not punch in the junk!

I definitely read those and made some big changes to my nutrition plan over last year.

What didn't add up was that in one section it says "water is useless" but it also says consume upwards of 2 bottles of fluids and shoot for 150-250 calories / hr on bike... Which seems impossible with a sports drink (2 bottles of Perform >400 calories).

With oceanside done and now shifting gears to IM Canada I thought I'd put it out there to see what regimen others are following on the bike.
  • If it were me, I know what cal/hr I can / should take in for a HIM and the cal/hr I can/should take in for an IM. I would drink sports drink to get that number and then water, if I needed to, to get that pee 2x requirement.

"Water is useless" is Patrick's note...and it's probably stronger than it needs to be.

Bottomline is that HIM nutrition is different from IM nutrition and I, personally, definitely target towards the low side of cals so I can race harder. I now what does and doesn't work for me. You have time to figure all of this out before CA
  • For a HIM I will just drink the Perform the whole time (like 3 to 3.5 bottles worth).

For an IM I drink as much Perform as possible the first half of the ride (6 bottles), eat a PB&J, then switch over to water and a few gels the second half of the ride. I don't mind the Perform but I can't drink it for 5+ hours.

As Rich stated, my caloric requirement are quite different for a half (maybe 250/hour) than a full (closer to 400/hour).
  • Makes sense... Thanks for the info. I'll dial it in between now and canada

Thanks for the wisdom once again Dino

And thanks for not punching me in the junk Rich
  • Don't let your guard down. I may yet decide to punch you in the junk

  • Haha... That actually made me laugh out loud
