Flying with bike

I'm flying Delta to ToC and they 'say' they want $200 to for me to bring my bike along. Anyone know if that each way?

Comments

  • Yeah, pretty sure that's each way.
  • The fact that Delta and United are the only airlines that fly direct to Charleston from NY is keeping me from doing a 70.3 in May. $150 - $200 each way is prohibitively expensive.

Bike "friendly" airlines include Southwest - bikes fly free too (thank Lance's tweeting for that). JetBlue $50 for a bike box up to $99 pounds & Virgin Air $50.

  • T.J Tollakson, a pro-triathlete with an entrepreneurial bent, has this solution which for an initial outlay of $500, pays for itself after the first trip or two. Here is a link to a recent thread on Slowtwitch which also discusses.

Or, you could saw your bike in half, like I did:

  • Thanks for pointing that thread out Al I knew about TJ's hydration system, but not about the bike case design. Very interesting.

On the way to Tahoe last year I watched a US Airways agent smile and laugh as she charged my buddy $100 for an EMPTY bike box. She was also giggling about how it was going to cost double that with a bike in it on the way back. Hey, a policy is a policy, but don't rub your customer's face in it.
  • FWIW Dan,I plan on shipping the bike out via FedEx. It will be cheaper than flying with it AND it will be insured (carrying it on the plan means accepting risk of damage/loss).
  •

Dan, how about Ship Bikes? http://www.shipbikes.com/. I've heard good things about them, but have no personal experience.

  • Zow....yeah, lots like I'll have to ship it. I did last year but I had to ship it out almost a week before. I have have races before (actually the day before) and after ToC and only one bike. But $400 to ship my bike on  $237 ticket is ridiculous.

Guess I should of checked this first before I booked by flight.

Thanks for all the help and feedba

  • Bicycling Magazine just posted this set of articles on their website.  Great timing for the summer cycling season!  Good info here for those traveling with their bikes.

  • I love that article, Nemo! If I ever fly with my bike, I am going to slap a big,  Hasselblad sticker on the case, carry the Nikon with its NIkon-y strap prominently and hope for the best.

  • Interesting & got me checking Continentals policy (I'm flying Miami to Cozumel with them) - looks as tho' its during an 'excess bag embargo' - anyone flown with bike in similar circumstances? Slightly confusing chart here;

    Thanks,

  • In 2001 we did a tandem rally in Hawaii and flew our tandem (6 foot case). The agent asked it it was "one bike." We said "yes." She didn't ask how many people could ride the one bike. That was when it cost $75 each way and the agent in Hawaii on the way back didn't want to deal with charging us so we got the trip back free.

I would be very, very hesitant to fly a bike. At CDA last year, one of our friends had a really bad experience. His bike box was trashed (bike was OK). But, while he was waiting another lady's bike and bike box showed up. It had yellow on it like it had been run into a pylon and tire tracks so it had been run over.

Tribiketransport.com all the way if they are going there. If not, contact them and see if they will.

  • I always fly with Southwest and they only charge $75
  • Another bike shipping service worth checking out. http://www.bikeflights.com/
