Temperature adjustments to Power and Pace

Is there a calculator or spreadsheet to help me with temperature based adjustments to Power and Pace?

What is the temperature "zone" where no adjustments are needed?

  • In the menus @ the top of every page, go to "Resources >> Racing Member Central >> Race Execution Details", about 2/3rds down under "Calculators" you'll find a link to an XLA spreadsheet. I have not tried it for functionality recently (it had some problems a while back, but I think they are fixed."

NB: THIS IS FOR IRONMAN RACING ONLY!!!

The nominal temperature is 60, meaning it will calculate a slower pace for any predicted temps greater than 60F. While it is an EXTREMELY effective predictive tool, I gave gravitated in the past year to relying on HR as an equally effective way to control pacing in are sorts of variable situations.

  • Thanks for asking this, and the quick reply Al.  I just learned some hard lessons at Oceanside about the difference between training at 50ºF ambient and racing at 70 ºF (race report to be published soon).

  • Thanks for the reply. I found the tool. My only problem is I don't have a computer. I'm on my smart phone.

My expected temp at run time is 71. My vDot is 46.

If anyone's interested in using the tool for me. :-D.

I understand it's a full distance tool. Just looking for a rough idea if what I should expect.
  • Again, if this is for an HIM, the tool itself won't generate a specific pace for that distance. But that temp usually means a 4-5% reduction in speed, as a rule of thumb. Hard for most of us to consider, but there it is.
