Foot- strain or stress fracture?
Hi everyone--
I have an injury that came on suddenly (after, not during) my 1/2 marathon last Sunday, 3/30. My foot feels like I strained something in it and it is quite painful to put weight on it, especially the first few days after the race. I kept to swimming and only hiked (no run, but straight up a mountain) last week. It seemed to be ok as a I swam and biked over the weekend and then tried to run this AM for 30 minutes. It was painful but not as painful as walking through the house doing chores, errands, etc. I had my NKT therapist check it out this morning and he released the achilles which seemed to bring relief, but I think it was the advil I took after I ran. He seemed to think it was soft tissue as it didnt hurt much when he pressed on any bones. But the pain has been increasing as the time on feet today increases. I have broken 3 of the metatarsals in this foot, and it doesn't feel like a break, but it feels quite deep instead, starting on the outside metatarsal (I broke this one in HS), moving over top of foot and around ankles, at first only on the outer, but now also the inner. I can get temporary and minor relief from massaging the top and outside part of my foot below ankle. There is no bruising or noticeable swelling.
I had an urge to do something about it, so I ran over to urgent care to see if I could get an Xray, which showed nothing (which I have read most stress fractures don't show up on xray), but I wouldn't say that the medical assistant who did the xray was even remotely like getting an xray from an "xray person" (LOL, maybe radiology tech? ) She was like, foot flat, turn, turn. Just saying I have had enough foot xrays to know when i am getting a good foot xray.
So I don't know if anyone has any experience with a stress fracture or strains in your foot that could give me any insight. The doc I saw for my hip was not the greatest and I will call a couple that were recommended to me in the morning, but any personal or professional insight into this would be helpful. And any insight into how to find a solid ortho/ sports med doc that will give me useful advice- I guess that maybe I took our amazing ortho practice for granted in my previous hometown. Thanks in advance!
