patti's repair and restoration

Hi, coach!  Geez, I wish I had time to call and go over stuff for this race in 5 weeks.  Yikes!  the weather still sucks and I'm having difficulty getting my open water stuff in and it's two loops on the swim...  we had storms that knocked out power and lots of lightening.... I know, I'm whining and I live in Texas, not the Northeast so I should buck up!   anyway, here's the deal:

1.  left leg issue.  the injection  with the weird new stuff worked okay (about a month) but the major improvement came from using the Hokas instead of Newtons for long run.  soft, soft shoe that is really slow but no pain in leg.  may have to run in hokas for the race

2.  back pain:  PT using bands to strengthen abductors on right every day and pump class working on left arm weaknesses.  I don't know why fixing left arm helps right leg, but what the heck...still painful but clearly muscular, not nerve related

I will look for a time to call when work schedule slows down to discuss Lanzarote.  I'm mystified by the swim... haven't looked at the run, bike looks ok.  50/34 in front and 25/12 on back.   any thoughts on course are much appreciated!!!

  • Patty, it's never easy to build up for a race. Maybe you remember that next time when you pick one of the hardest race is known to mankind. :-)

I think you're a great place and you learn some good things. Racing in Houck's is a no-brainer I've done it and being comfortable and pain-free is often the source of race day speed.

You can still load up on the swim even in the last two weeks so there's still time there. Maybe use some of that time with the bands and your PT to do some work on your rotator cuff and shoulders as well to prepare you.

The gearing sounds great, but I don't know what the conditions are like typically in terms of weather in regards to what you'll need to do for nutrition. That in and of itself might be worth a web search.
  • Thanks, Patrick. Hokas are the bomb! Will do some more work with the bands for the swim....

you know, I have this thing about challenges....
don't know, although I have been pondering the extreme race in Finland for a future race image

I love your advice! and I hope some more EN'er's will join me on the next adventure, whatever it is. I'll be the only American in my age group and I plan to wear my new, super cool EN jersey!

on the nutrition, I understand it is like Hawaii so hot hot hot! I'm thinking plenty of salt stick and run with ice in my hands.

  • I love the plan and I think you'll do very well as long as we can get you as healthy as possible. The more epic the race, the better. If you become interested in Norseman, let me know a good friend did it last year. If you want more companions for those epic races you have to give us a heads up! :-)
  • Many thanks! Wish me luck! by the way, I referred my friend whitely to you all. she is an awesome cyclist but new to triathlon. she is thinking of doing Louisville this year. thank you all for everything and for being so accessible!
  • Of course, and thanks for the referral!!
