First week of training HIM plan toward Quassy

Just finished the GF Plan. Testing got me a bump in my FTP and I stayed the same with my run.  Downloaded Week 10 of HIM Intermediate plan. My plan does not end at Quassy. I am racing through. Anyway, I find the first week of HIM hard and today proved that to be correct. I overeached (calculation error, not intentional) on my run yesterday and with a swim (back to back with Monday) and then 3 x 12min with 2 min break between had me coming in at the bottom of my new FTP. I know this feeling and just have to be confident that it can only get better if I stay well fueled and focused. How is everyone elses training going?

  • Thanks for starting this thread! I'm in HIM Week 13 now, started with the HIM plan last week. Did my mile repeats last night but since I did them around my hilly 'hood, I didn't hit the target paces but I did the best I could. Very pleased with my hill progress, both on the bike and run so far this year.
  • I too rolled into week 13 of the HIM plan and will be here for a bit before moving to the IM plan just prior to Quassy (I think). I'm a day behind - did the long swim and a run today. But, looking ahead this week, the plan looks daunting - tougher than I remember it from last season. Not sure if the coaches switched it up or memory is bad. The new FTP levels are tougher for me - I did an ABP ride on Monday and found it hard and tomorrow's vo2 I'm sure will not be a walk in the park. Glad to know I'm not alone!

A bigger concern for me is the balancing act that is that my wife and I are both doing Quassy and IMLP and we are juggling this with work, 2 kids (9 and 10 yrs old, not to mention a new puppy!) Not sure if we bit off a little too much but we are determined to make it work!

Thanks for starting the thread, Brenda.
  • We're all in the same boat...I jumped into HIM plan last week in Week 12.  Monday's swim felt good, but I was slower than T+3 for the 500's.  Yesterday I had a great run.  Actually was faster than my 2x1mile target, but the swim afterwards was not all that.  My arms felt heavy from Monday's swim.  I lost some pool time when I got caught by the coach who teaches Masters swim at my pool and we talked for a while.  He's been MIA because his dad passed away so I needed to chat for a while, however, I got 2200 yds into it and realized I had to cut it short to get to a car appt on time.  Frustrated not to finish the WKO, but sometimes a friend is more important than completing a swim WKO.  image

Still trying to figure out when to get today's bike and run in, but I WILL do it.

  • Brad- I thought it was just me! Plan def looks harder than previous plans.

Antoinette- yeah, don't sweat a shortened wko. In the scheme of things, it won't make or break your training.

Did my 6x1 on the road bike without power since tri bike is getting tuned up. I did hill repeats then just a mile run afterwards as the sun was going down. My wife joined me as she's doing her first sprint in July so I'm helping her train. She totally rocked it! It will be sad when she's faster than me.. Guess that means I'm a good coach ? image

Long run tomorrow! Haven't done much for long runs since my half Mary 3/22 so this should be interesting....
  • Hey everyone!!! Great to see this thread started  Thanks Brenda!!

I have been in HIM plan for a couple weeks and I am on week 13 now.  It has been quite the transition! Good stuff though!

Did the VO2 intervals on the bike today...I was nervous....but dare I say, they felt ok?!??!? Did the run this morning. Long run tomorrow...crossing my fingers that the wind here CALMS WAY DOWN! I would prefer not to run in 23 mph winds!

Keep up the great work everyone!! Love reading the posts!

  • Just finished the days VO2 interval ride.  Honestly I was dreading it, but it actually felt really good.  Not easy, but really good!  Long run tomorrow too and I'm sure my legs won't be rested, but looking forward to a nice long outdoor spring run!  FINALLY!

  • Like others I switched into the HIM plan this week where I will remain until May 5th. I think/hope this week is the hardest with 2 long runs in 7 days. Sunday (End of GF plan) and today with the HIM plan. It may not help that I ran a HM on Sunday as my long run. I just did my intervals as the plan called for and the rest in Z2. Ended up setting a PR. I am looking forward to April 20th, a day off.
  • Just back from today's long run.  Held Z2 for 90', hovered around Z3 for 15', but just the last mile at Z4. Overall a great run, 2 hrs and 14.4 miles.  Going to find my foam roller now

  • Tonight's long run started off ok and a decent pace, but after I turned around after 4 miles, I hit a headwind and slowed down. Then I had some GI issues and needed to find a "porta-tree"(I know, tmi) so last 2 miles were pretty rough. Managed 8 miles with just a couple of mins to spare before dark. Glad it's over. Need to be more careful w what I eat for lunch on thrusdays from now on....
  • Good group ride today, including EN teammate Laura, who totally rocked her first group ride ever. I, on the other hand, struggled a bit. Hills, even though I am improving, are still a big weakness. I rode the first 28 miles, about 1:48, at .91IF. (I had to ride that level just to try to keep up!). Then EZ 12 miles at about .68IF.
  • Thank you Kim!! It was so great to finally meet you in person and ride with you too!!! Looking forward to next weekend!

So yesterday had a great group ride 40 miles, followed by 30 minute z3 run (could not hit z4 for a mile after my ride!!)

Today ran before my ride to hit the Z4 mile...which ended up being a Z5 mile (I SUCK at pacing when I run...excuse my language but I get so mad at myself sometimes!) This is when I like the treadmill because at least I know what I am running.  Will continue to work on pacing. Good news is I am getting better at pacing Z3 miles....They all seem to be pretty consistent! Total: 4 miles

After the run went for another long ride...ended up doing about 42 miles, slower, but lots of hills, elevation gain of 3,400 ft.

My legs are TIRED!! looking forward to swimming tomorrow!!! WOOHOO!!

  • Nice job Laura!

I did the run before the bike today. Surprisingly, I hit the Z4 mile, then 2nd mile was closer to Z1, but finished the last mile at Z3.

Ride was pretty easy today. Rode 15 miles with the wifey. I used the hills to do some Z5 intervals so I would get some fitness benefit. And the SAU account should be full!! Weather is going to be too nice tomorrow not to ride so I'm doin it!
  • Hi folks,

I'm with you guys too, wk 13 HIM. Glad to see I'm in such good company!

Wish I had great things to report but...just trying to hang on to the training plan with my fingertips. Missed workouts, workouts cut short...all because I took a temporary second job (9 days only) house-sitting for 4 elderly dogs and two parrots while also going home every day briefly to take care of my cats. The tight dog walking schedule meant I had to give up a few workouts. But the hard part was the dogs had me up 3 to 4 times a night for walks. I'm exhausted. Job ended today. I finally get to sleep in my own bed!

Next week I plan to focus solely on training. A little nervous about the race rehearsal next weekend but it will be what it will me.

Keep up the good work, gang.
  • Heeyyyyy I've found my group love again after leaving the GF plan to keep me motivated..... hello everyone.

I'm in week14 of the int HIM plan. Off for a bank holiday weekend in the UK so I'm hacking the plan and skipping the RR this weekend and going for 2x4hr bike rides - OUTSIDE (1st time this year!) wheeeeeeeeeee.

I've done 2 of the long runs so far - had problems walking the rest of the day!

    Good luck with ur RRs.
