Eastern Europe in Aug 2014

Just booked my flight yesterday, Sat 8/9 thru Mon 8/25, in and out of Krakow, Poland.

My friend Gretchen and I are going to Eastern/Central Europe, just for kicks! I'm going to be her "date" for a wedding outside Krakow on Sat 8/23, which is why we're flying in/out of there.

Our plan was to spend about four days each in Hungary (Budapest mostly), Czech Rep (Prague), Austria (Vienna) and Poland (Krakow).

I've already read through most of the Rick Steve's book for those countries, but they seem to be mostly centered around the big cities I've mentioned above.

Ideas on things to see?

Hungary/Budapest: baths (crazy!)

Poland/Krakow: Auschwitz-Birkenau

Czech Rep/Prague: Salt mines, bone church

Austra/Vienna: just got to this section of the book

Any other suggestions off the beaten path, that won't cost an arm and a leg?

  • I'm happy for you Scott. I love travelling to Europe and I've never been to any of those cities so I am not qualified to suggest anything. This June I am taking the family back to England to show my daughter where she was born. No race schedule either! It will serve as a transition between my spring and fall seasons.
  • Scott - my daughter Bridget (IMLP '13) studied in Krakow at Jagiellonian University, Spring Semester 2012. I spent 10 days with her; Krakow, Warsaw, Gdansk, Prague. PM me if you want to talk, way too much to write about. From the mountains of southern Poland to the shipyards on the Baltic, we gave Poland a good going over. Trains, planes and buses. You are in for a treat on your trip!!!
