IM Cali 70.3 Race Report (22' PR w EN)

I Just briefly wanted to share my Oceanside experience. This was my first race with EN (I joined the Oct OS for the last 9 weeks and then moved into a Intermediate HIM plan for 7 weeks.

Last year I did Oceanside as my first HIM - at 5:44.  This year I improved that result by 22' to a 5:22. My overall goal was to run a 1:53 run with perfect execution - which I missed by about three minutes.

This year my splits were:

32:49 3:37 2:47:21 2:11 1:56:48

Last year:

33:54 4:27 2:56:54 2:48 2:06:29

My goal watts for this years ride (I was using a iBIke iSport - the Fisher Price powermeter)
was around 240 watts and I averaged 225 watts.

I am happy to say that taking the winter off from swimming posed no problems.

My goal run pace was supposed to be around 8:40 (I averaged 8:54).

The downside of my race was my inability to slow down for the first 3 miles - I
just kept chugging away at a 8:35 pace despite trying to slow down and imploded around
mile 9. In the future I will walk for 30 seconds on each of those first three miles.
My last 4 miles unfortunately were in the 9:15 - 9:30 range due to poor execution.

It was also great to hook up with Coach Rich, Peter Carroll, Dave Ambrose, Brian Massey,
Matt Ancona and others after the race. Thanks EN!

  • It was great to meet you Tom; great venue choice. Awesome results. I see our bike split is very close (you two minutes faster) and our run almost identical. If only I could swim. I think you will see a trend for yourself. For every event I have done with EN compared to pre-EN, I have made big gains. I have no doubt Oceanside is the first of many for you with EN. Best of luck as you prepare for IMCDA.
  • Congratulations! 22' PR is unbelievable!!!
  • Nice result. Work works, huh?

You will get the execution thing down if you work at it. Should there really be anything easier to accomplish than running SLOWER? I agree that it is hard to do sometimes but it pays off later.
  • Nice 22' PR! Great day for the race too. Sorry I didn't get to meet up at the end but I had a family outing in Newport that I had to run to.

  • Nicely done! Enjoy the ramp up to CdA - you will crush it. BTW - we enjoyed the pitcher of brown ale so much that I ordered another after you left image
  • 22 minutes is huge, as others have said. Looks like there's more where that came from too. Congratulations!
