George's IMCdA Dilemma

After the recent shooting of the Jewish Community Center by the KKK's former grand poo bah my wife is having significant concern for my safety at IMCdA as Couer d'Alene is a HQ for the KKK.  I have not heard of any direct incidents involving non-white triathletes at IMCdA but there's not many non-white participants there or anywhere else.  So, I am strongly considering changing my season plan to nix IMCdA.  My options are to transfer my registration to the June 29 Lubbock, TX 70.3 or just cancel and lose the bulk of the registration fee. The trouble with Lubbock is I have never had a desire to go to TX. I already have a registered for IMMT and IM Maryland (early reg).  I probably should have waited the 10 days on IM Mary to transfer the registrations but felt the race might sell out.  I considered appealing the WTC for an exception but my past appeals to them have always been denied.

Wow, that is a heavy decision and makes most of us realize how fortunate we are to not have to think of these things and how much progress still needs to be made. Obviously this is a very individual decision. I think on one hand their is the pride in being that non-white triathlete, especially in a place like CdA, but safety first. And will this put a big damper on your experience, if you/your wife are worried? Maybe shoot WTC an email not asking yet about a transfer appeal but just voicing your concerns and asking if they have measures in place to deal with any threats.

1. WTC will not grant you an exception for this.
2. I think this is an extreme over reaction to things. There's zero history to back up that decision.
3. The Aryan Nation compound was never actually built. There was one idiot at the center of all that and he lost the property and it was auctioned off in 2013.

What Bob said. I've been to CDA many, many times and have never seen or heard of any incidents of any kind whatsovever (sez the white guy, I know). But expect that your family's opinions are also a consideration in your decision.

My 2 cents on Lubbock - it's not the garden spot - ok the spring fed lake is clean with campgrounds around. Very well organized by the Greers (one of the few independent IM events). The only reason its on my calendar is because it's so damn hot & miserable which is perfect for IM Louisville.
