Dave M Macro Thread

Hi Coach Rich,

I am new to EN and enjoying this very much so far.

My 'macro' question is whether I have enough time to adequately prepare for an IM late this summer/early fall. Potentially Tahoe. I have competed in short course events for the last couple of years, and have targeted the Vineman 70.3 as my 'A+' race for the season. But I have my eyes/heart on an Ironman distance race eventually, and wonder whether I could use the momentum from the HIM training to complete a full Ironman.

I would like to do this the 'right' way and not rush, risk injury, etc. Looking for guidance on whether you think it is better to warm up to the full IM distance over the next 12mo, or if doing one late summer makes sense.

I think I 'should' be able to prepare for the IM distance in time, but the stories of Tahoe last year are somewhat horrific. Is there another race to consider? Or is it late enough in the registration cycle to just wait for next year?

Look forward to your thoughts, and thanks for running a great site.

Dave

  • Following up on this, would a race like Maryland in September be worth a shot (versus Tahoe course)?

  • Hi David,

There's no question that you can be ready, physically, to do either IMLT or IMMD, given your training and racing schedule for the rest of the year. But whether or not do an IM is a function of timing - where/when your race is in relation to what's going in your personal life, geography, etc - where your head is at, family and $$$ considerations, etc.

In other words, the train stuff is easy. That other big picture stuff is much more important when making a decision. I recommend you start a thread in the Race Selection forum and have the Team give you their perspective.
