Replacing Helmet

Hello All,

How often do people replace their helmets?  I have had mine for a few years (3 or 4) and i wanted to know what is the standard amount of time that you should replace it.  (No crashes or damage has been done to the helmet)

Thoughts?

  • I spoke to a Giro rep a few years ago and he said no more than 5 years (honestly, don't know if he was talking just about Giro or all brands).

At the time, I had two 5-6 year old Giro Pneumos that I was alternating between for every ride. I had just crashed and was going to throw away one (always discard after a crash!!!), so the timing was good. I rode my second/last Pneumo until EOY when there was a big sale at a LBS and I invested in two brand new Specialized Prevails, which I love.
  • The received wisdom - received as Scott says from the manufacturers - is that after five years, the foam starts to become brittle and loses some effectiveness as a shock absorber.

  • OK, great to hear. i have a few more years. Excellent.
  • I've been going about 3 only because I rot out the liner sweating through the summer. I also think the sun down here is harder on helmets and they oxidize and get brittle faster.
  • The rule is whenever is ceases to match current favorite kit....
