Quassy W/O 4/28/14- 5 Weeks to Go!

I'm moving my one weekly swim from Fri to Monday so I'll be swimmin' tonight.  iPod is charged this time.  (Boy, once you get used to having tunes to swim, it is hard to go back!)

Comments

  • @kim - I found it hard to swim with music only because the EarPods kept popping out of my ears...I must have weird shaped ears!

I'm one day ahead again and did 1 hour swim...I recently moved from a 25yd to a 50meter pool....what a difference! I feel like I'm swimming and swimming before that wall comes! I did 2600meters/1 hour

Also did a 1 hour run with 2x1mile at z4

This weeks long workouts are LONGER (long run and bike)!
  • Brad- I have trouble with the earbuds on longer swims without rest (like RR swims). I usually tweak them in between sets because, as you said, they do pop out.

Yup, I noticed the longer weekend workouts too. I just wish the weather would cooperate! I'm going to do a "May Day" ride with Cycling Concepts Sun, weather permitting so I'm going to flip flop Sat & Sun. and do 60miles Sun.

  • I am looking forward to racing Quassy again. I have a little redemption or payback. That course spat me out last year. I still finished.
  • Did the 2 x 1 mile on the 'mill tonight. Tues. wkos are always tough for me. Maybe cuz it is like Monday since Mondays are off for me so tues. are back to wkos. Got it done at targeted pace. More rain tomorrow so back to spin class. Sigh
  • Hey All!!

I am still here, but just been SUPER busy!!! Wishing I had more time to post lately.  Good news is I have been getting in my workouts and heading in the right direction for my upcoming races!  Great to see everyone is working hard, so awesome to pop in and read your posts.  Keep it up all WE GOT THIS!  @ Kim- I may be doing the May Day ride too! I will let you know.

@ Simon, thank you for taking over as our Captain!!! And thank you Antoinette for all your work with the lunch and getting us goin! I very much appreciate it.

Looking forward to keepin the mojo up as we move closer to our race.

  • After picking up a nasty head cold from my 9 year old daughter, I'm reluctantly standing down a day. Foggy head and my throat is on fire! Maybe this coincides nicely with the monsoon outside since I was supposed to do a long run today. The guilt has set in, but I feel that it needs to be done today. Hoping for some renewed strength by tomorrow....
  • Is there such as thing as the “month-away” jitters? Maybe calling it a tremor would be more accurate… like in Jurassic park when the water in the glass starts to pulse as t-rex approaches. Something like that.

Made a pact to hit 100% on the rest of the workouts between now and the race (to the voices in my head – sorry, we’re not negotiating anymore). We’ll see what “life” has to say about that, but now that we've rounded the corner into the home stretch, I think it will be do-able. Figured I’d go public with you guys for that extra accountability, loving the mojo that's starting to radiate from here

Meanwhile, getting stoked hearing about / watching / cheering for folks as they get into the Spring races!

  • Evan- ok, we will keep our eyes on u. image

Stupid rain had me doing another spin class tonight. Someone remind me next year not to take the tri bike off the trainer til May!!
  • @ Brad- feel better!! I know what you mean about  kids bringing home sickness...as a teacher I probably wash my hands at least 15 times DURING the school day! I used to greet my kids with a high five every morning....now its an elbow bump LOL. @ Evan- I am with you about the nerves!! But keep the positive thinking going and we will SUCCEED!!!

Hit the trainer tonight to get my ride in since it was pouring rain and chilly...UGH. Hit my numbers and felt pretty good.  Extended the ride by 20 minutes instead of doing the 20 minute run, because I did not want to run in the pouring rain, and I didn't want to drive 15 minutes to the gym for a 20 minute run.  ( not treadmill at home).  Long run tomorrow...supposed to rain but it will be 70!! I will take it!!!

  • Raining here again, but calling for warmer weather so I just may get it done outside today. Fingers crossed. I'm starting to accept the fact that with this chilly spring, my first open water swim with be in Lake Quassapaug. I too have made a packed to get in all workouts from here on in until race day. No more excuses. It's down to the wire and I don't want to be hurting too much come race day, sooooo time to get real.

    Happy long run day everyone!
  • I have an interesting week as I am heading down to New Orleans for the Jazz Fest. So I swam this morning 2000 meters. Will throw in a run or two over the weekend.

@ Natalie your weather makes me never want to move to Canada even though then peeps are awesome.
  • Maybe the goal for all is to push for every workout over the next month. That does seem to be the common theme.
  • 2 hour / 15 mile run done today mostly in the rain. Doing this with a bad head cold was really not fun and as my wife pointed out, not very smart. I am supposed to do my long bike tomorrow. I hope I didn't sabotage that with today's run.

    http://connect.garmin.com/activity/490878441

Simon - enjoy NO and the jazz fest. That's something I've always wanted to see. We expect a full report!
Laura - these kids are like little Petrie dishes!
  • Brad- Take care of yourself! I missed WKO or 2 won't kill you but pushing too hard might do more harm than good!

So after fabulous long runs the past 2 weeks, musta been time for a CRAPPY one. Started off great then went downhill (unfortunatety not literally) Average pace was almost 1 minute slower than last week. Fought some GI issues but luckily had a real porta potty vs. a "porta tree" but still super slow. Oh well, got in 8.88miles before dark. Legs actually felt sore, including calves and glutes. Maybe from last night's spin class? At least I got it done!
  • @kim you got it done. About to head off island and head up to Boston for my flight. Have a great weekend of training.
  • I got in the long run.  Picked a super hilly course and it was apparent in my total distance.  2 hrs, 13.3  miles.  I felt really good til about 20 minutes to go, then for some reason, wearing the same shoes and same kind of socks I normally wear,  could feel blisters on toes of both feet.  I tried to push for z4 while trying to keep from feeling the blisters - couldn't manage both, so I settled for z2.5 with a slightly altered footstrike trying to keep my foot from sliding.  Maybe it was form the hills and my foot moving inside my shoe on the downhills...who knows why these things randomly happen.

Not sure I'll get in today's swim - DH has knee surgery scheduled for this AM so the next 3 days is unknown.  Perhaps if I don't get to the pool I'll take a spin on my bike and a short brick run.

  • Hope the knee surgery goes well.

I had the same issue with my toes on the long run yesterday. I had a three mile steady downhill section that may have been the cause. The toes felt fine on the climb up the hill. I will have to try adjusting the lacing and see if it makes a difference. 14.3 miles in 1:59, just a little slower than goal pace.
  • @ Antoniette and Larry- Way to get it done!  @ Simon- Have a BLAST!! I am jealous   @ Brad- Nice Work- Take care of yourself though! @ Kim- You did it!!

Your posts were uplifting to me.  I had a crappy run yesterday.  The past couple of long runs have been great...averaging about 13 miles. Keeping paces fairly consistent. I have been dealing with a glute pain (right at the top, just below the back, piroformis area) for a couple weeks. Nothing major, just annoying. I knew it had to do with my alignment, which was confirmed when I went to see my chiro- who was shocked at how off I was. (He had been away for a few weeks so I hadn't had a chance to see him for quite a while). Anyways, started my run yesterday and felt fine, didn't feel it at all- however I was going way too fast for a LR pace. I kept telling myself to slow down, pay attention to form ect. Well at mile 5 my glute flared up. I stopped, took a drink, adjusted and tried again....by mile 6 it was worse. Now it hurt. And kept hurting. Now the pain was even traveling a bit. I would stop and walk and I was almost limping! Then it started to get mental too. I was only a mile from my start point because I was doing a 2 loop course. So I jogged back and pulled the plug on the run.   When I reached my car- I lost it. Just devastated. My goal as our group said, was to not miss a single workout and there I was having to pull the plug on a long run.  So after I pulled myself together I evaluated what could be going on and here is some of my thoughts.  1.) I know my hips are off again because I can feel it as I run or even walk. This could be attributed to a couple things, but one thing I noticed was as I am running on the sides of roads there is that slant down...which jacks my right hip up. When I am running on flat (like in the middle of the road) I don't feel it as much. Something to keep in mind. 2.) I need to work on pacing. I need to warm up WELL first- not by doing several z4 miles....3.) I need to watch my form and think about my foot strike.

I am not sure what the exact situation I am having is. I am going to the chiro tomorrow and will hopefully get some answers. Doesn't really feel like a pull, feels tight, and a little achy. This morning I rolled it again. Not feeling it now which is good. Thanks for listening to my long vent!!

  • @Laura Chiro, Massage and listening to your body will help. Do not be hard on yourself because of it. Better to stop short today and deal with the issues then pushing through and having long term issues.

@Simon have a great time. I went to the Montreal Jazz Fest a few years ago and loved it. I keep thinking about heading to New Orleans some time.
  • Laura- Ditto what Larry said. Perhaps it was just not our week for a good long run. I'm just happy the last 2 prior long runs have been great. I know we're all trying to commit to getting in every WKO til the end, but sometimes our schedules and bodies have a different plan and you have to do the best you can....

I'm going for some ART treatment today to "fix" my bum shoulder. If I can move my arms afterwards, I will swim....
  • @laura - this is definitely the time when injuries and such creep in as the workload piles on. Listen to your body (I wish I could heed my own advice!) and take care of yourself.

I did long ride yesterday preceded by 25 run. This time I did 1.5 hrs on trainer including the FTP intervals. I hit 3 out of 4 intervals, but was forced to do the final one at z3. This cold I have has gotten worse, and I'm really afraid of missing too many days, but it's sapped me of energy and sleep. Directly after the trainer work, I went outside and did 2hours at z2ish, which was 30 miles and 2000 ft climbing. I was pretty cooked by the time I got on the road...again, probably due to my health. At one point as I approached stopped traffic for tree work, I went to unclip my shoes and did a humiliating tip over...felt like slow-mo. At that point I knew I wasn't right. Thankfully, no damage was done. I regretfully am taking today off. The cold has moved to my chest and I'm really drained. No plan for tomorrow until I see how I feel, but hope to get in either 2 abp ride or at least a swim.

This is my final week in the HIM plan. Next week I'm on to the IM plan. I'll be up at Quassy next Saturday for an organized ride of the course. If anyone is interested, here is the link http://www.active.com/middlebury-ct/triathlon/races/quassy-course-preview-ride-2014.

    Hang in there folks. One month till Quassy. <img src='http://members.endurancenation.ushttp://members.endurancenation.us/DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default/emoticons/smile.gif' align="absmiddle" border="0" class="afEmoticon" />
  • Did a 30 mi group ride today at .83IF then 2 slow, hilly miles run around the neighborhood. Doing 60 hilly miles tomorrow. That ought to be fun!!
  • My 3.5 hr ride today got me 63 miles.  Rode from home to one of my favorite places to ride loops, the Saratoga Battlefield, rode one loop checking out the gorgeous spring scenery and tons of baby deer, and back home just in time before the rain started to fall.  Legs felt good.  Need some good stretching and a session with my roller before tomorrow's ride.

  • Sounds nice Antoinette.

59 miles and 4100 feet of climbing. We shall see what tomorrow brings. I am running a 5K before heading out on the bike.

    Good luck Kim!

    Get well Brad.
  • Hard ride today. 56 mile LBS "May Day" ride turned into 63 miles. Here are the elevation gains by device: Garmin 910xt- 5,386. Map my Ride- 4,815, Joule- 6,766. My legs agree with Joule. Avg speed was just under 13 mph. Ugh. .79IF
  • Hey Quassy gangster's Well my best guess on getting out on the bike proved the best decision today. Three hrs of sprinkled showers before the down pours. Seen/talked with Brent Eritou as I was leaving the park. He was doing a monster race rehearsal day wowzer. Well in all this weekend's totals 7 hrs of Gatineau hill climbing and 2 hrs of running. What a solid weekend of outdoor cycling can do to your psych, I bet Brenda feels like Freud right now.Quassy here we come and I hope I am ready

  • Laura - Y'know those workouts where everything just seems to come together beautifully, and you end up feeling 10 feet tall and bullet proof?  I've often wondered if those workouts have an evil twin.  Sorry to hear you had one of those this week, and completely identify with that feeling of devastation.  Hoping things are starting to look up!

Steve - I should learn from your example, time to get off the trainer and onto the road - short of a freak snowstorm, will be out in the Park this week!
  • @Evan, the cycling weather looks good this weekend. We will be in the Gats again Sat. The downside the park is open to traffic then. Finally taking the bike off a trainer and now hauling 20 lbs around the hills is a little different but the hills of Quassy does await you. This week I am just trying to roll forward and get into the park one more time before Fri.

  • This is it peeps, hope you all seen or heard the webinar. Be smart this week and stay healthy this week. See you all in Middlebury!
