310XT Failing -- What do you suggest?

Garmin repair/replace?

Or a new device?  If new, what do you think is a good value?

I do use a Garmin 510 on the bike so I'm not without a device on the bike.  I can borrow my wife's (my) old Garmin 305 for a short time.

Thanks for your input.

  • Have you done a hard reset of the unit? And are you running the most recent update? These have remedied any problems I've had with my 310x.
  • In my experience, a Garmin 500 for cycling + 305 for running is a great combination. Personally, I've never had the need for a do-everything GPS unit.
  • I did the hard reset on the 310xt today. Long run in the morning so we shall see.

Rich you're probably right. But this 305 was retired years ago. I've see the insides and what years of sweat did to it. Plus not much battery life left. But for my wife, learning to run...works just fine.
  • The just outa beta Garmin Fenix 2 HRM bundle is on my to-buy list. It does everything my 310 does, plus it has a complete ski mode (that's downhill, my other sport), is smaller, has some new running metrics, like indoor pace without a foot pod, vertical oscillation, and can be worn as a watch ... 50 hour battery life with some modes turned off. For me, seems to be one watch to rule them all. I will still use my low end 4 year old Joule for bike metrics.

I also have a couple of 305s which still work, one I keep @ second home, the other for my wife.

Garmin usually charges $80 to "refurbish" your current wrist computer ... usually means they just ship you another one.
  • The 310xt held its own on the long run today after a master reset. It's up-to-date on firmware and does almost everything I need, so if it holds together through IM Boulder then I should be OK. For me I use the 310xt for overall IM event timing, but use the Garmin 510 on the bike for power numbers and other metrics.
