Kid nutrition

Hey guys,

Does anyone have any ideas/ recommendations for calorie and electrolyte replacement for junior athletes? My daughter is 9 and she's starting to do epic road rides and run. My concern is that I don't want to assume she's just a "little adult". Especially where sodium is concerned.  Our family doctor doesn't have anything to reference. Thanks Jacklyn

  • Hi Jacklyn,

My best advice to you would be to see if you can find a local sports nutritionist that specializes in working with kids. The children's hospital in your area should have this information available. If it is not readily listed on the website, contact the pediatric orthopedics or pediatric sports medicine team and they should be able to refer you to one. As a pediatric sports medicine physical therapist, I often get questions similar to this from concerned parents. The sports nutritionist we have on staff does a great job of helping young athletes safely reach their goals.

    Hope this helps!

  • Infinit actually makes a kid formula.  My kids like it.  But if they are eating well and sleeping well probably any of the sports drinks would be fine.

  • Ok. Know I have something to work with.  Thank you very much. Great advice. Jacklyn

  • My 9 year old boys are starting their 3rd year of competing in triathlons (using the term competing loosely) and I have found some good information on the USAT site as well.
