Glute pain - back connection?

So, I've had some pretty strong pain in my glutes for about a week and a half.  I did the DC half marathon on Saturday, 3/20.  Took a couple days off after, and wished I'd been more careful ramping back up to speed in retrospect.  Instead, pretty much jumped back in on the following Tuesday .  Kept on schedule through this weekend, but then had to take a break Sunday through Tuesday this week. Tried to go running again today, but was feeling the same pain after 40 minutes of running today.  I've been icing and massaging trigger points with a ball and foam roller.  My main question is: does it make sense that injury/tightness in the glutes and hamstrings would migrate to my lower back?

I'm going to work on getting an appointment with a sports doc/pt tomorrow, but I was curious about the back - glute connection if anyone had any insight.

Thanks!  Hope the weather is as beautiful everywhere else as it is in Baltimore right now.

  • my answer is YES it makes sense. I tweaked my back this past weekend, but know that it's 99% due to the fact my glutes, piriformis and hammy are all tight. Time to get back to basics with the stretching and do lots of swimming!!!! image

an easy way to visualize it is: on the front you have the hip flexors that move up from the hip and actually insert into the front of your lumbar spine and on the back you have your glutes/hip rotators and hamstrings . If one side locks down, you pelvis gets yanked either up or down which will then affect the other side. Example: if you stiffen up in the back part of your hip and thigh, the front part of your hip and your low back (due to that lumbar insertion) won't be far behind.

For multiple muscle groups, good sports massage is the way to go. Get it all dug out and then pack yourself in ice that night to prevent it from swelling up.

  • Thanks guys. There's a pretty good sports massage therapist near me that I'm going to get signed up with today.
  •  Eric- Just had a massage at Massage Envy in Columbia. Saw Michelle who was very good. Nice deep pressure.  Have also seen Kelly. I have a membership there for 49$/month for an hour massage, you get a discount for additional massages in that month. FYI

( PS- will probably start swimming masters at Meadowbrook next week. Is that where you swim?)

  • Hey Tracy -

Thanks for the tip on the massage in Columbia. I'm giving Johnny May who used to work at Joe's Bike Shop a try. He's definitely sports specific. However, the place you mentioned is a little bit of a better deal.

And I do swim at Meadowbrook. I'm still in OS for IMLP so I've just been going to Masters 1-2 days a week at 9AM. I haven't tried the early one yet, but I might try it some day soon. Maybe I'll see you around the pool.
