Should I reconsider Half?

I am battling a nasty bacterial infection . It compromised Sunday's long bike. (I only rode two hours ) and this week I missed the Tuesday workout for my IM beginner week 8 with 20 remaining. I have a half IM scheduled for the second weekend in June. My bike and swim are where they should be but due to an I T band issue the past two months My long runs have not exceeded 6 miles. My I T band seems like it's getting better. My question: thoughts on missed workouts and scheduled half.,, should I reconsider doing the half?

Best regards,
Stephanie

  • Thought's hmm. First question Are you actively engaged in your IT rehab and is it resolving? You seem to be moving forward and trg through this issue. You mention you are happy with your swim/bike progression
  • So happy with swim/bike so far. You would be in week 12 I believe for this race. My thoughts are if you keep up the rehab and the workouts as regular as you can. I feel you should be able show up at the startline. To me this is an opportunity for a couple of things!

    1) Test your mettle to overcome your inner fitness/health doubts and demons.

    2) Test your swim/bike fitness in real competition, assessing your abilities in a race is great feedback for oneself.

    3) There is nothing like race mojo to keep you motivated and moving forward for your IM trg.

    4) With your cross fitness you would be surprised at how well it helps your run. The key to the run is not to do stupid moves like paces above your ability not practisied/trained. If the IT becomes an issue on the day during the run do a run/walk or lastly shut it down before you do put yourself back . If you are unsure before the run aquabike it is.

    5) Alternate would be to go to a differ distance that day. In all you paid for a race, reap a little bit of the reward!

    6) No matter on race day about your performance take all the positives from race day issues. They say a lot about yourself that come out, analyse and apply them forward in your trg as you move forward.

I hope I have invoked some thoughts for you to ponder. Utlimately it is all about you getting to the start line as fit and healthy as you can whether it is this HIM or to your IM goal you hold the trigger. Lastly macro/micro/support page for the coach's input and keep up the great work you are doing and dang get that IT demon gone !

  • Great input here from Steve! I am okay with you doing the half as long as you're doing it, not racing it. It's still important have those milestones. That daid if you need to walk away from the run because we want to keep you healthy – which is our top priority goal – then you have to be ready to do that too.
  • Great advice. Thank you for your valuable insight... I truly respect your expertise.
  • Wow! Thanks for the thoughts and logic. I am grateful.:)
