Selling local club jerseys at bike shops- anyone have experience?

I've got a small (really small) local non-profit club that is trying to find a way to deal with annual re-ordering of cycling jerseys (no- it's not EN, really, it's a local club!)  Meeting the Minimum Order requirements always cause a fuss and it's just a big hassle.  One of the local bike shops (also club member) has offered to put up the $$ to buy the jerseys and just sell them out of his store (he collects revenue, pays taxes, and gets whatever profit is left).  The jerseys are really nice- we get lots of compliments- and living in a "tourist" local, lots of folks express interest in buying a jersey as a souvenir.  So the deal seems like a win-win.  I just wanna be sure that by doing this we aren't gonna screw ourselves on the non-profit status or get into trouble.  I know lots of bike shops that have their own "clubs" and carry their own jerseys, but this is just a little different.

Has anyone else run into this before?

  • Good luck; I know the IRS is always hunting for tiny bike clubs to squash them out. Just ask the shop owner to donate the profit from stuff sold via his shop to a local charity. image
  •  Nemo, the tri club that I belong to has moved to the model that you discuss, and it's worked well.  Feel free to PM me if you want more info.
