Thanks Mike. I just remember there being a table in Coggan's book that describes an entire workout based on in its variability index. I have found that the rest interval messes a bit more with IF, because based on that, my workout tonight would have only been 92% when my work bouts were >110%. Anyway, maybe over thinking this!
Dan, it should be the IF of the interval, not necessarily that of the entire ride. Generally EN workouts would be intervals at a certain IF, and the remainder of the ride, IF = 0.85. Ignore the IF for warm up, cool down and rest between intervals and sets.
Rides with high VIs would be lots of hard work and lots of easier work. Not sure Rich would buy into lots of the easier stuff
Yea, after looking deeper into the workout, I agree with you guys. I just highlighted the intervals and looked at my numbers instead. I don't know why I was looking at VI... I'll have to re-read. Thanks!

Dan, I think you're asking what should the IF be? Target for most VO2 workouts is 110% or greater.
VI tends to be high, as the rest intervals are often half of the on interval, so I'm not sure it's a helpful metric.
