Jonas McCluskey's Micro Thread

What does it mean when your watts go up, but your speed goes down?  I know wind & hills can impact, but I just did a 56 mile test, my best ever norm power of 211 watts (VI 1.01) for 56 miles and only averaged 20.3 mph.  Comparing that to my HIM ride during the Steelhead 70.3 event last year where I only averaged norm power of 187 and average speed was 21.7.  I got jipped man, 24 more watts, but 1.4 fewer mph’s!  13% more power, I want 13% more speed J.

Can the mph jump around that much, and I should just be happy my work over the winter is paying off in increased watts, as I was also able to run the 6 miles afterwards .5 mph faster than before as well, or could there be something wrong w/ my bike???  It feels fine, and I know no brakes are dragging or anything.  I still weigh my same old scrawny 145 lbs. necked.

I know this is a murky one; any professional insight would be interesting.

Thank you,

Jonas McCluskey

  • Hard to compare Steelhead to a local route. Much better to compare a frequent loop than two different events - race day draft, race wheels, etc. Would be interesting to note if your PSI is different too...
