Jodi's macro questions

Coach Rich, looking way ahead to IM Choo, I am scheduled to begin formal IM training on 6/30 which gives me 8 weeks til IM. I am also doing IM Camp August 21 - 24. What happens the week before and during camp? Do we train straight through (I assume)? I was wondering if it is a good idea or a bad idea to join my riding buddies the weekend before camp for a tough century on the blue ridge parkway. I am the only female and the eldest of the group so I would be pushing the whole time just to maintain some dignity. I can live with not doing it if you think its crazy.

    Camp week:

    • Mon-Wed normal
    • Thurs = travel day, just take it off
    • Fri = RR brick #1
    • Sat = RR brick #2 (most people shorten it a bit from D1 schedule)
    • Sun = long run on the course

I'd say you can do whatever you want the weekend before camp, as long as you feel you can bounce back from it by Friday. Fine if you need to turn down the Mon-Wed stuff to do that.

  • Hey Coach Rich, I am looking ahead at week 18 of ironman training. I am scheduled to do my RR#2 on Saturday and take Sunday off. There is a local OWS Sunday, and the lengths are 1 mile and 3.5 miles. It will take me about 40 minutes to swim a mile, and a looog time to swim 3.5. (My ironman swim time is 1:45). I would really like to do the swim since I don't get many OWS opportunities.  Should I swim the 1 mile, the 3.5 mile, or bail out after 1 lap of the 3.5 mile swim (1.75 miles)? Or should I just volunteer?
  • Swim the 1.75 and call it a day. Sounds like a good training event!
  • I have questions about race week in Chattanooga. 1) During the team dinner, I would be glad to spend 5 minutes (along with Amy and Jim if they agree) to address how valuable camp is. Just let me know. 2) I have two people from my hometown who are competing and I want to invite them to the 4 keys talk. How do I get them the information, and do they sign up to get a ticket or just show up?
  • Hey Jodi,

Registration for the talk is here: https://thefourkeyschoo.splashthat.com/ Please have them register beforehand for the talk. Please share that with as many people as you can, etc.

Thanks, but I'm not sure if the team dinner is the best venue for that. I think what I'd rather do is close out the year and then ping all of the EN athletes who went to our camps this year and work with them to put together the Mother of All Why You Should Attend an EN IM Training Camp Threads, then just point everyone to that.

As we discussed, 98% of triathletes, and 95% of the camps out there, think it's about the training on the course vs the learning opportunity. RnP have game when it comes to teach our members, in person, how to race IM. We'd really like to get more participation at these camps from the members.
