Short Course June 2-8

Big week at my house. All non-triathlon related.  Last child graduating High school and then vacation. woo hoo!.

What is going on in your world?

Comments

  • @Ralph - lots going on! I am in Short Course Week #11 and have my daughter's wedding in week #12, then the end of week #13, I go to Germany to teach a week long course during week #14, then spend time with my German cousins week #15.

So, I reviewed the SC plans for those weeks, reviewed what facilities the hotels have, asked my wife what the heck I am doing during the week of the wedding, then read the WIKI on planning workouts during vacations. Now, 2 hrs later I have a plan.

Week #12 - focus on run and then swim with pungee cord if I can break free for 30min when the indoor pool is available
Week #13 - focus on bike and swim before I leave
    Week #14 - same as week #12
Week #15 - basically a rest week since my German cousins think exercise is only for kids and I am a crazy nut. The day after I get back, long bike, then back to the plan.

I almost just gave up and thought about just paying RnP to figure this all out, but it got to be fun after a while. I used to do this all the time for every week until I joined EN. Now, I just drink the koolade and not really give it much thought!
  • All - interesting note for you HR athletes. I did the HR test this past week and compared it to the one I did for power and the 40 K TT I did all in the last month or so. They are all three almost exact.

Just an interesting insight for those of you not using power yet!
  • Dang, Joe. I thought I was busy. Congrats again on the wedding.

Your self coach is earning his pay for sure!.  I switch from bike focused to Get faster this week and graduate my daughter from high school and go on Vacation to Florida with the extended family who also are not big fans of sweating.  Looks like I may get in some Open Water Swim though. My posts may be a little intermittant or terse since I will be doing it from my iphone with my big ole thumbs.  Have a great week all

  • I raced my first Triathlon last Sunday. Great weather and water temp at 70 degrees. Perfect! It was a Sprint and I PR'd and crushed the 1/4 mi swim in 6:44 knocking off :45 sec from the last time I swam there. I followed that with a solid bike (22.7 mph avg) and 23:03 5K run.

At the end I was officially listed in 2nd place which I would be very happy with except I never saw the guy who was listed in 1st - especially since he finished only 1 min ahead of me (1:08:xx vs 1:09:xx) - I'm sure I would have noticed an old guy flying past me on the run - he posted a 21:30 5K which for us old guys is extremely fast. No one in our group knew this guy and all of us in the upper AG know each other.
Anyway, today I was informed that the guy who was listed as finishing first on Sunday’s race was actually in the 30-34 AG. How did that happen? This is actually the 2nd time this year that a younger guy was listed in my AG and it took a day or two to correct. Not sure why these guys don't correct it on the race day. But it was sure nice to get it straighten out.
    Never a dull moment.
  • @Jim Congratulations. Fantastic times! WOW!
  • Just finished my Gran Fondo. Race report done. Learned a lot.

@ Cousin Ralph- have a fantastic vacation! Enjoy the water.

  • Amazing job @Jim winning your AG! @Jacklyn - nice job with the Gran Fondo that sounded tough.

On Saturday I did the Girls on the Run 5k with my daughter. It was only my second run in a month as I have been letting my foot heal. It went fine, she got a PR :-) I am feeling I can start to slowly add some running back in. My plan is try for frequent short runs, that way I can assess how it feels with less risk of taking something on that is too much.

Due to that and a work meeting I never biked Saturday, Sunday had me doing a bunch of yard work, so the weekend was light on training.

Had a solid swim session on Monday, enjoying using my new Garmin 910XT for swim metrics. Today, I did 12x1' Z5 and about an hour of Z3 for a really solid bike. I am definitely feeling stronger on these intervals and able to put out more power than a month ago.

I also restarted a yoga practice this week with 2 short sessions. I think this is going to be really good for me both from a de-stressing point of view and with stretching out the tightness. I am hoping it helps with the migraines I have been having post-rides. My goal here is to like my running and aim for consistency not volume.

    Have a great week all!

    David

  • @David- I was really surprised you popped up on my strava. Thanks it was eventful. Do you normally suffer from migraines? That concerns me. Do other people get migraines after they exercise? Great to hear about your daughter!

  • @Jacklyn - It is good to see what other Oregon folks are up to using Strava. The migraine issue has come and gone for a couple of years. I pretty much only get it after riding. Recently it got to be more frequent. I think it is tension from my job (physical and mental) combined with the neck strain of riding.

  • @Jacklyn - read your race report and it was certainly entertaining. I think the cobblestones are humbling - no matter where! Amazing when you watch the Tour De France, those guys are doing like 30+mph on them. Good job toughin it out - completing a course like that at any speed is impressive!

@Jim - those are some fast times! I'm looking forward to seeing how you do at World's! Heck - I'm looking forward to seeing you at Nat'ls! I'll be two waves before you.

@Ralph - you doing that monthly local triathlon series again? I'm curious to see the progress you've made since last year.

For whatever reason, I've just felt deflated, calves twitching, niggles in the shins and quads, and overall a total lack of energy this week. So, I skipped the week #11 Wed run/Thursday bike sessions. Although I did the swim yesterday, it was a very pedestrian 100free/100kick for a total of 2000 SCM. I did however, make my packing lists for my upcoming trips and added some more sleep time.

Tomorrow - I'll try and run in the morning and see how that goes. I will do a swim during lunch or after work - just because it always makes me feel better even if I just do a lot of kicking.

So - although I am not a basketball fan, I am being swept up in the Spurs fan surge here in San Antonio. Fun to watch!
  • @ Joe- It wasn't a lot of fun at the time but in retrospect it is kinda funny. Except for creepy dude. Yesterday I tried a low key velo ride with my family and friends. Couldn't get out of the saddle. Still really tired and sore. But better.

  • You guys got to check out Anthony Smallwoods thread "Confession time, I'm fat and need help" it's awesome!

  • I decided after my post, to do some wiki research on "self-coaching" with respect to injuries, over-training, vacations, etc to see what I could learn about when to skip workouts and what to skip.

To make a long story short, if you are feeling the start of over-training, you can skip a block and just bounce back. A block is Tuesday - Thurs or Sat-Sun. If it is longer, then re-do that week, take a rest week break, or seek RnP guidance in the micro-forum.

So, i decided to not try and make-up a run today and just do the swim work-out. What a great decision. Great swim work-out and the aches are less, mood is better, and I am looking forward to tomorrow's bike-run.

    Thanks again RnP!

Oh yeah - the Spurs game was good. Glad I was watching it in my AC cooled home!
  • @Joe - that is useful to know, I have wondered the same.

Today I did a 5k race. As expected I was slower than pre-injury, but only by about 1 minute. I'll take it. I will use that for my new zones as I start back into run training.

I followed up about 2 hours later with my bike ride. Legs were tired and the first 25min @ Z4 was a struggle. It improved as the ride went on. Did a 20min@Z4 and some Z3 for a total of 1.5hrs. Less than planned, but all I could fit into my schedule (plus I had ran a 5K)

  • I did my first century ride today. It was "slower" than I wanted, but I worked hard on nutrition and hydration and feel like I did a pretty good job with that. I did the Tour de Cure for my cousin's daughter who was diagnosed type 1 last year. I will be honest and say that on the turn into the finish I had a moment like holy cannoli, I just rode 100 miles. After I put my bike in the car and changed my shoes, I did a little jog to see what that felt like. Ummm, wow, and how does one do 26.2 after 2.4 and 112? image

Cheers! I hope everyone had had a spectacular Sunday.
  • @Joe - I am planning to do the James Island series again this year. The next race is Fathers day. I may or may not make that one depending on spousal-related matters. I will let you know how I do. Just back from vacation and the 6 beers that I drank is more than my previous 3 month total so my performance may be off a bit... we shall see.
  • @Elizabeth- Outstanding job! Riding 100 miles is fantastic. Your a rock star.

I'm having a hard time swallowing the 100+ ride then run right now. It's tasting very bitter. My Gran Fondo experience, while pretty funny at times, rocked my fledgling confidence significantly.  I think i'm still recovering physically and mentally. My legs still feel weak and my resting HR is up still. My post event recovery was very poor nutritionally. My gut did great during the event but crashed the day after.  I lived on broth and ginger ale for most of the week. NUTS! But know I'm finally hungry.

@ Cousin Ralpg-Good to have you home! Hope you had a great time.

Today is my first day of Short course. Bricked bike/run. Had a hard time hitting the zones. Heart rate too high. Legs felt pretty good. Still don't have my bike power back but better. Did good on the run hill repeats. Have a great day everyone! I'm really proud to be part of such a diverse and hard working group! Thanks

  • @Jacklyn ~ Thank you! I love reading your posts. They are so full of enthusiasm!

ps- my girl parts hurt! image
