Do you convert the swim workouts to yards?

This may have already been answered....but all my search results return some internal error 500 unable to search thing.  If there is a thread that discusses this feel free to just to post up that link & I'll read it.

So...I just discovered that the indoor YMCA pool I've been swimming in is 25 yards NOT 25 meters.  I'd been told on two separate occasions by staff members that it's 25 meters.  Be that as it may - I now get to move on with the knowledge that I'm slower than I thought and I've been cutting all my swim workouts by a few hundred meters.  Sigh...

I've always read the swim workouts in meters (even though it doesn't specifically say meters).  So on tap for tomorrow is the following workout:

So...in my mind I read 3400-3800 meters Now that I know I'm in yards should I convert each set to yards (i.e. 200 meter warmup now becomes 218 yards - or 225 to round out the set)?  Or....are the workouts meant to be read either meters OR yards depending on your pool length?

Thanks!

  • David,  I don't know what others do, but I did most of my training for IMTX in a 25yd pool too.  I tried to do my RR swims (last 3-4wks) on Fridays in a 25m pool. I didn't have any trouble with the RR swims or on race day.  I don't think 400yds extra makes a lick of difference.....it's already long, what's another 400yds!  Too much math for me to try to convert all the workouts.  Just my $0.02.

  • Additionally, you're gonna be in a wetsuit on race day, so even less of an issue IMO.

  • Vast majority of US lap pools are 25y. I just do the workouts as is. IE. 3800 = 3800 yards. After all, the run and bike workouts are in miles not K right? Consistency.
  • I'm the same as Joseph, I see 3800 = 3800m or 3800yds, whatever pool I'm in!
  • I agree with Scott. I do the prescribed distance whether it be yards or meters. If a yard pool and the workout is 2500, I do 2500 yards. If a meter pool and the workout is 2500, I do 2500 meters. It's hard enough for me to count my laps; throwing some mental conversion gymnastics into the mix is beyond the realm of possibility!
  • I also just use EN numbers for what ever pool I workout in after 2000 plus yards/meters you know you have the fitness to do what ever your race calls for. Exp: if you swim a 1000 yard/meter SC race, unless your following the line at the bottom of the lake you are doing more no matter what cuz you not swimming straight and throw sighting into the mix I'll bet your doing much more.
