another powertap question.

i have a wired  powertap SL. and  I just got a second Powertap wheel.I can not not get my second wheel to talk to me computer. I can have two wheels and one computer right? Is there a trick to getting it to talk for a wired version?

  • Normally you have one wheel and two bikesimage

It's been a while since I had a wired one, but isn't there a "find" function? Hold both buttons down on the computer until it says "find" and then release. With the wireless models there is also "pairing" which associates the hub, computer, and HR monitor, but I don't remember this being on the wired models. If it is, you made need to "pair" the computer with each hub every time you switch out. Pairing requires the manual image
  • Hmmmmm, been a while since I had wired too. But that's the setup I used to have, and I don't seem to recall needing to "Learn" the Hub ID when I swapped the wheel. I think I just used the "Find" function and it all worked seamlessly.
  • Dumb question- but are you sure the new wheel is also a wired hub? Just trying to think of a reason the wiring harness wouldn't be picking up the signal.
  • I dont see a find function, how do i do that?Ii swapped my cassette back to the old wheel and it worked today so i am not without power thank goodness. They both should be Powertap SL. If i got a wireless that would be ironic but a very good reason to why it wouldn't wor!
  • The find function; hold down both buttons on the yellow computer at the same time. Really fast will change intervals, 1 or 2 seconds will bring up the find program. Let go or you will go into the clear mode and then settins mode. You should be pedalling to spin the hub. Within a couple of seconds there should be the hub indicator showing up on the top left hand corner of the computer which indicates the hub and computer are sync'd.
  • Thanks Tom I will try this out! Wish I had 2 10 speed Cassettes! but dang I am getting good at swapping!

If having a coach kick you in the nutz isn't an issue there are some 2009 Ultegra 11-23 & 12-23  cassettes on sale over at competitive cyclist for $45 now. link

  • Thanks I might have to get one and risk the kick!
These two hubs look identical except one has 20 holes and one has 32....
Very frustrating. Guess just need to call Saris.
  • One more really dumb question- have you tried changing the batteries in the Hub that the LYC isn't picking up? Maybe it's just not sending a signal? BTW- where did you get the new PT wheel? Was it used or is it new?
  • It is used and i replaced the batteries first thing before I put it on the bike just to be sure.
Maybe i finally got burnt on buying used... I am talking to the guy who sold it to me though.

There's no such thing as "finding" a wired PT. That function only applies to wireless hubs.

Is your computer running firmware version 2.21? 2.21 is the latest firmware for wired PTs.

    Thanks, Chris

  • Ok so i figured it out.... It is a powertap SL 2.4 wireless version! The 2.4 is all but rubbed off the battery cover so I had no clue but saris pointed me to a few things that identified it for me. So now I guess I need to hunt down a SL 2.4 computer! I might as well go wireless since i have the hub right!?

Anyone know of any good deals on the SL 2.4 Computer?
  • Philip,

You can check eBay for wireless 2.4 LYCs. But ...

The other option is to upgrade the 2.4 hub to ANT+, you plug a dealio in to it and it magically becomes an ANT+ hub. It's a $99 dongle thing that gets sent from/and back to Saris. This would allow you to use a Garmin Edge 500, Edge 705 or FR310xt as a head unit. Something to think about.

  • Ha! Guess my question wasn't so dumb after all :-) What a nice little bonus!
  • Philip, I would suggest posting to the EN and Slowtwitch classifieds that you what to buy a 2.4 wireless LYC. My guess is that with the number of people upgrading the Joule or other computers now you can find someone that has one sitting around and is willing to let it go for cheap if you are patient.
  • Nope not a dumb question at all! I am very happy with the turnout though!! I wish I could pull of the ANT + upgrade and a cooler computer but I bet tht would set me back way to many SAUs while im in HIM Race prep already haha.
