Chris J Micro Thread

So I'm in training for Challenge Roth and going well so far with week of June 2 being week 14 IM Plan.

Micro issue is I have a work trip to China now scheduled for the weekend of week 16 and Mon-Fri of week 17 (big build weeks). Looking for advice on adjusting the training that week. I really only have access to hotel gym during the trip and while a 3 hours treadmill run is possible would like to avoid.

Going to do my own bike camp June 13,14 with big run June 15.

Worried about losing the big bike volume June 21/22.

Thinking long bike ride Friday the 20th before I leave, suck up a 3 hour treadmill run at the hotel gym during the week then jump back to long bike ride June 28/29.

Thoughts?

  • The most important thing is that we keep you healthy around that trip. Training is secondary. Seriously. Yes to Friday long ride, but no to 3 hour run on the 'mill. But I think you could do an hour a day, every day, as a durability and consistency exercise. And to keep you in the game. Think Zone 2 steady state, nothing flashy as it's every day. Then the long ride on either 28 or 29 with the other day OFF! Then back on plan!
  • New topic. So I'm 4 weeks from having done Challenge Roth and have gotten on the IM plan with Chatt in 7 weeks.

Mind and physical strength is good but when I push the effort on runs / bike my HR jumps to about 10 bpm higher than normal for that effort (pre-Roth). I have Chatt camp next week and not sure if sticking with the IM plan workouts but lower the intensity? add more recovery days? or just don't overdue it and see if the HR gets back in line?

Resting HR is fine and HR recovers quickly once the effort is diminished.

    Thoughts?

  • Just an example:

Pre-Roth flat 12 mile run focused on pace only: 8:17 pace with avg HR of 155
Today's same 12 mile run focused on HR not going above 162 (zone 2): 9:43 pace with avg HR of 156

  • Fatigue brother. You need to taper a bit more for IMCHOO and you'll need to really fuel that race like a rock star. If you can, I'd rather have you dial it back right now, really doing nothing until the weekend...that should get you back on track. It will be hard to do but you did just do Roth so we know you are fit!!!
  • Thanks and great job at MT!

I took a few extra days for recovery and it looks like a full 4 weeks was required to get back on track. Attended Chatt Camp and all seemed well.

  • Epic. Plus you can't beat that camp knowledge of the course! Will be great to see you race!
