switched out a compact for a standard ...

I have about three different builds on the go at the moment, and decided I would put a 39-52 on my tri training bike.  It's been about 10 years since I rode anything but a 36-50.

HOLY CRAP AM I A WEAKLING.

Seriously, I don't think I needed to switch from the SCR for 5 hours.

  • Still, you move pretty fast. I didnt know Ironman was a weight lifting contestimage
  • I thought to do a crit race this year and also thought to switch back, as I have compact on both my RB and Tri bike maybe not so much now.
  • That is an eye opening statement considering who it's coming from. I'm probably buying a new bike in the next couple of months and building it up and was thinking of going from a compact to a regular 53-39 using the logic that (a) even on a hilly race like Vegas or WI I always have more gears available on the cassette when climbin in the small chainring, and (b) I on a flat course like last weekend I will spin out with a decent tailwind.

    I am now "thinking twice"!!
  • @Matt:
If you want to stick with a 110BCD crankset you can always get some different ring sets for different days, praxis and wickwerks both make really nice replacement rings. When I do road races or crits I put on the "alpine double" which is either a 52X36 or 52X38 on a 110BCD crank. Riding this size is nearly identical to the 53X39 with less shifting to find the right gear in road or crit racing. It's also not enough of difference visually that my road buddies give me crap that I'm riding a weak 110 BCD crankset. Roadies refuse to give up the 130BCD 53X39.
