Broken radius just above wrist

We had a friend (not EN) go down yesterday and broke her radius just above the wrist.  It is a clean break and the ER set it.  She will go to an orthopedic this week.  My friend is 52 so I suspect that healing might take a little longer, but she is a strong athlete (won her AG at LP in 2012, and regularly wins at RRCA Grand Prix races, and has done 7+ IM's in the last few years) so she has that in her favor.

My friend just ran IMTX and is training for IM Boulder with us.  (This was her first hard ride back after TX).

What is the experience of those here in the house?  Is there a way she could work this to stay trained to still run IM Boulder?  Looking to set her on a course that gives her some hope.

  • I'm not an orthopedic surgeon, or even a doctor, but I would be concerned about the long term effects of another accident and injury to the wrist before its fully healed.  Her bike handling skills could be compromised for awhile and a simple fall running could be very bad too.

  • I had a similar break about 7 or 8 years ago from diving for a softball in a game. I hate to say this, but I didn't think it would ever heal. 9 weeks and 3 cast later I finally got it off. Arm looked like a pencil compare to my right one. It took quite a bit a time to get my range of motion back and and the strength in it. I would think she would be able to ride the trainer with little worry of further injury. The movement from running my cause some pain initially but as it heals it may get better. Best of luck to her and hope it works out.
