Heart Rate Super High

I just got back from an "outside" training camp. Did tons of cycling and got a lot stronger, however on my last day my max heart rate was 196 and I burned almost 5,000 calories, it was a short ride (about two hours) but parts of the climb were at 17%. I was dehydrated and for the first time ever, drank 1/2 bottle of that "5 hour energy" drink they sell at the counter of all sports stores, forgot the name of it but it promised 5 hours of super energy without the jitters. I know there are lots of factors, dehydration, that 5- hour stuff I drank. But I wasn't aware until I downloaded by Garmin, kind of freaked me out. I have been kind of "off" ever since, that was the last day of a grueling 7 day camp., leaving for Kona in 5 days to "practice with my son" on the course. Gettting lots of rest and trying to drink and eat a lot, just wondered, at 56 years old my usual MAX has been 165, has this ever happened to anyone????

  • I've found in group/rally format bike rides, where there's lots of riders, that Garmins get interference from other Garmins and records someone elses values - or even combines them to make some SUPER high HR.

Did that part of the ride FEEL bad?!?
  • I am sure you've thought of this, but, I figure I will mention it anyway - when you ride with a group of people, and you are all pumped up and excited, you don't even have to so a lot to hit z2 or even z3 because you are already all hyped up!  I sometimes watch YouTube videos while on the trainer and I often catch myself getting all fired up during my warm up because of the Ironman trailer I am watching...and I am just warming up!

That probably played a part in it too...

  • I am not that surprised given the day's work, what you ingested and your cumulative fatigue. The big question is are you better now!!??!!

  • What everyone has said: dehydration + stimulant = high heart rate. When you had this high heart rate were you short of breath, dizzy, have arm pain/numbness, right upper quadrant abdominal pain, chest pain? Did this high heart rate feel like palpitations or skipped beats?
What is your resting HR now?
