  •  I'm down in LA (Santa Monica) with my wife for six days closing out my father-in-law's estate. This may be the last time I'll get to run down San Vicente and then along the Pacific bike path for my long run, where I'm headed just now. Then I have to find a couple of long rides for the weekend, and some short stuff for runs on Mon and Tue. I'm skipping the swimming while here to let my shoulder rest. For the past 8 months, my rotator cuff has been "aching", gets worse the more swimming I do. I;'m writing it off to 50+ years of laps finally catching up to me. My speed's still there, and I don't think my technique's gonna change much at my age, and I know weekly lake swims in May and June will work just fine.

  • @ Al and Bryan - I worked at the RAND Corporation in Santa Monica 1988 - 1990.  My standard lunch run was down the Palisades then up the median on San Vicente and back ... perhaps the best part of my assignment when the air was clean.   I lived in Thousand Oaks at the time and every once in awhile, especially if I had a running injury, I would bike with the locals on Mulholland...usually about 35 miles before I was dropped on some climb.   So I understood where Bryan was talking about.   And I sympathize on WHAT he was talking about.  I've blown several tires before and have never been able to fix one during a ride.   In 2008, I was doing an organized ride on the Great Floridian course and watched my front tire start to bulge about 100 miles and it blew at about 103 ... ugh.  Everyone going by offered me tubes or CO2, but I needed a tire.  So I started walking for about 2 miles on a very hot summer day until I saw a homeowner and asked if he had a knife.  I used the knife to cut a piece of the old tube and used it as a tire boot and then put in a new tube.   Made it about 3 more miles on the bike...POW!   Start walking again....REALLY HOT.   Finally, I was about 110 miles...2 to go...when the race director found me.  NOT FUN!   Ever since, when my training tires get old, I take a spare tire with me as well as tubes!
