Aero helmets (air attack)?

Thinking about replacing the brain bucket this year--my giro is approaching the five-year mark.  The thought was maybe getting an Air Attack (no shield)  or an LG course as a replacement.  My position on the bike is comfortable, but positional fitness is still a work in progress.  Should I just stick with the standard rd helmet?  Any suggestions from the haus?

No desire for a full-on TT helmet.  It's too hot here in the summer, and if I don't train with it racing will be no fun.

  • I've had an Air Attack for a year now. I use it except on the very hottest days (over 84F) for all my rides & races. Probably does have an aero advantage over standard issue Giros.

  • LG Course no question. Too hot in Washington in the summer? Bwaa, ha, ha, ha!!
  • got this and it is cool enough for Tahiti:

and cheap enough so u can still buy a regular road helmet
  • I have the air attack and I like the shield. In aero the frames of my glasses were always obstructing my view. With the shield it is much easier for me to see and consequently I strain my neck less.
  • Hope you don't mine me tagging along here...I've been considering buying an aero helmet too.  No idea what kind/style, etc.  Does it make sense to buy an aero helmet if I'm a middle of the pack kinda gal?  How much difference does it make and any suggestions would be great.  I plan to use it for IMLP - weather can vary from cold and rainy to hot and sunny (all in the same day).

    THANKS.

  • For what its worth, I just got a Giro Air Attack (with shield) as a Father's Day gift! I did a 5 hour ride on Saturday using it on a fairly warm day and absolutely loved the comfort. I've never had any sort of aero helmet prior and figured that since I'm coming up on my 1st IM distance race, now was the time. Since I kinda move my head around a lot when I ride to stretch my neck, a helmet with a tail probably didn't suit me well.

@Antoinette - I am also middle of the packish on the bike. I remember one of the coach's saying that aero "stuff" benefits people who are on the bike longer since, well, they are spending more time on the bike....I guess that makes sense. Also, in terms of bang for the buck, a helmet is probably the way to go in terms of aero gear.
