Hi Coach P,

Question about training with some road rash...

I took a spill over the weekend on a ride in an Olympic race. No long term damage, but got decent road rash on my left leg, arm, elbow and shoulder. A wide paved shoulder became a tight gravel shoulder and I didnt see it coming...Muscles, joints, etc are all fine, there is just some scabbing and 'burn'. Helmet and bike made it out unscathed.

The biggest pain - my AAA+ race for the season is in ~4.5 weeks (Vineman 70.3), and I would like to keep the benefit of the training I have done up to this point.

So - my question...how should I tweak the standard week in the midst of the injuries? I dont think it is appropriate to swim with the scabs/burns that I am rocking, but I am comfortable running and hope to get back on the bike tomorrow.

I am thinking about keeping to the run and bike portions of my HIM plan. Any suggestions on what to do during the allotted swim workouts? Or other guidance as you have seen this before?

  • Run/bike but you'll need a week on the burns at least. Lots of good tips in the medical forums re road rash (glad you are otherwise ok!). I say you can do some dry land exercises (swim cords) and a short 30' run or spin to replace the swim. Otherwise a week out of he swim game won't hurt you that much!!!!
  • Thanks Coach P. I am super disappointed with the timing of all of this, but also grateful that I came out of the day with only some 'rash'.

I have been all over the boards and now have Tegaderm patches on the worst wounds. Now working on my patience to get comfortable with sitting out for a week...

  • First of all, you're lucky to come away with just road rash. Second of all you always come back smarter and stronger, so I look forward to you 2.0.
  • Much appreciated, Coach P.

Back in the saddle this week and feeling OK. Definitely learning from the mistakes, and will race smarter as a result...
