shoes

I can't get my tri shoes to fit right- I have low volume but normal width feet so if I tighten the velcro strap all the way there is enough left over material to hit the crankarm and eventually loosen the velcro and if I don't snug it down all the way my foot moves around and I get a hotspot.  I tried insoles to no avail.  I have one of the more expensive (italian)  tri shoes that is supposed to fit he best - felt good in the store but now after many hours not so great. So I think I may start using my road shoes which have a ratchet and snug down nicely- no hotspots there.

Do other people use road shoes rather than tri-specific shoes?  I am racing 70.3s so a few extra seconds at T1/2 won't make much of a difference, but how to get to the mount line? Run in the shoes? Carry them to the line then put them on (what to do with bike)?

  • I have a pair of Sidi Tri shoes with the same issue - too much velcro strap left over hitting the crank arm. I solved *that* problem by pulling the strap as tight as I needed, then "tenting" up the velcro in the middle so that the strap velcro did not extend past its mate on the shoe body. It;s second nature to me now, and doesn;t take any extra time. If that doesn;t solve the hotspot problem, then maybe different shoes are in order.

Tri shoes tend to be better ventilated, have a strap in the rear to pull them on, and lighter weight.

That's a great idea! i'll try it on my next ride.  Are you able to do this on the fly while riding?

Yes; on the flats, just roll along without pedaling, lift up the strap, give it a tug,, and aim the end of the strap for the end of the velcro on the shoe. Make sure to press down on the strap on each side of the "tent" for a good grip. Don't look down while doing this, if possible.

  • I've always avoided the straps that pull to the inside because of the issues mentioned (crank rub, etc.). I wear an old pair of specialized shoes with straps that pull to the outside. As far as fit, I do tend to favor the road shoes with the ratchet mechanism. And I wouldn't see the 2 seconds it takes to put them on as a big issue. I suppose the main reason I wear the tri shoes is to look and feel legit. Now, if I could afford a pair of those specialized shoes with the boa mechanism, then all of me would be happy.
