Lets Talk Road Bikes.

  • @Robin, Rich , Dave.... if I knew exactly what I want/need I would have no problem spending the cash for custom... I have a tendency to go overboard with stuff like this.... Completely unecessary... Its a bike that probably won't get used nearly as much as my tri-bike.... I gotta believe there are plenty of stock bikes that will fit the bill...

All I really want is a bike that fits, is lightweight , comfortable , and di2.... When I bought my Felt DA2 I got fit by Todd, shopped all the brands that fit, ended up on the DA2 which I love.... EXCEPT I HATE THE FREAKING REAR BRAKE! This one little thing is enough to want me to be sure about little things on my road bike choice...

Its not like I didnt like the bikes I rode... I just expected that when you get on a 5k bike you should say WOW this thing is freaking really nice! Just not getting that ....
  • I will just reiterate I really like my S3, and a lot of tour riders like theirs!

  • Tim - it just goes to show how personal bikes are. Some year I might even try electronic shifting. But I'm very happy with mechanical so that's not even on my list.
  • Keith, excellent video. Lets me know that I really don't need an aero road bike. Maybe I will just keep my Trek Madone and get a pair of aluminum rim mid-depth aero wheels for better braking. I know the Madone is very comfortable for long rides but I still want to try some sports-endurance bikes and see how they feel.
  • My take away .... Confirms my belief's that a normal bike is not anymore comfortable than an aero road bike..... An aero road bike is faster.... Kinda silly to buy anything else IMO....
  • I've decided....Anything worth doing is worth overdoing I always say..... Cervelo S5 Dura-Ace Di2 , Hed-Jet 4 plus front wheel w/conti 25c , Hed-Jet 6 plus rear wheel w/conti 25c , Power2Max power meter , DASH Strike saddle , TACX Uma bottle holders.... should be in by the end of the month.... Heather is going with the S3 Ui2 model.
  • Who could complain with that? You'll have loads of fun going up and down and all around town this winter.

  • Tim, I think you are making many of us very jealous right now. Enjoy that new ride.

    Dayum!!!

  • To jump into Tim's thread...

I worked with Sawiris last week to place an order on a Calfee:

    • Dragonfly frame
    • Enve forks
    • Enve bars for their "barstem" build: I send them the bar and stem, and they wrap everything in color match carbon, to match the bike.
    • Di2 road disk setup. After talking to some guys with road disk, I think I'm going to like it for all of the descending I do. I also just want a unique bike.
    • Everything routed internally and Calfee has a trick seatpost/battery solution.
    • Will probably go with a Quarq and not sure what Rich is going to recommend for wheels.

I'll work with Calfee to do a translucent carbon red, color matched to the EN logo red. So red on the top and outside of the front triangle, forks, rear triangle, white paint on the side. Probably some flavor of Work is Speed on the barstem, my name on the frame, EN star on the headtube and other nice little accents.

  • @Coach Rich.... Have you decided to add on sprinter shifters and climbing shifters? What type BB are you going with? LBS recommended this BB http://bbinfinite.com/index.php?route=product/category&path=68 Also what pedals are you choosing?

I talked to Jason the Cervelo rep and he said no to the sprint shifters , the LBS said he likes and uses his sprint shifter but admits to never using his climbing shifters, also said its easy to add after with just retaping of the bars its no big deal... I'm also going to stay with the stock BB from Cervelo/Rotor but that BBinfinit looks like the replacement when necessary... I'm still looking at shoes/pedals.... Kinda liking my speedplays again after riding look for a year but I need new shoes and am limited with 4 hole pattern.... Will probably start a lets talk pedals and shoes thread!

Thanks for the reminder. Yes, will get climbing and sprinting buttons. Will use the climbing buttons a lot, probably not the sprinter buttons but I want to have them so I can lord them over Dino et al during town line sprints

Dunno about BB, Sawiris will set that up.

I've been riding Looks forever, Keo currently on road and tri bikes. No reason for me to change. Have Specialized boa road shoes, in white and red to match, 'natch

  • Tim and Rich... You are both buying seriously kick ass bikes. Please don't finish them off with crappy bottom brackets.

    Buy a Kogel. http://kogelbearings.mysimplestore.com/products

Ok, let me get with Rich. Will also go ceramic bearings on the wheels. Probably Zipp 202 or whatever, road disk . The hard part will be deciding what color to use for the anodized bits: headset, nipples, etc

Already got my shoes picked out

  • I would go with Hawk Racing before Kogel unless someone could show me test results on the latter.

  • don't forget the gold plating.   image
  • Has anyone ever ridden a Wilier 0.7 road bike and care to comment?
  • Stalking this thread for the input... There was a LaPierre that was sweet at my bike shop on sale. (Ya know, us girls can't resist a sale) but it is now gone. (Not that I NEED another road bike) but doing some research in advance in case another deal comes along.

Anyone know if LaPierre is any good? I think it was a one-off at the LBS but was really pretty and super light. (More girly criteria aside from being on sale....)
