Short Course June 23-29

Happy Summer Solstice all.  Hope the Summer is shaping up the way you want it to...

Lots of news at chez Moore  Daddy got a powermeter (finally) Zipp 303 with Powertap G3 is on the way to my house.  That will give me plenty of time to get used to it before my big race in Oct.  But, I haven't mentioned it to my wife yet so I am going to have to get on that.

Had the first real group ride with some local riders yesterday and it was interesting for several reasons:  1.  The concept of carrying what you will need is not well known to the group.  3 stops at convenience stores in 48 miles.  2.  I have never seen anyone mix gatorade and redbull and then ride another 15 miles. 3. I have never before seen anyone draft a car pulling a boat at 35-40 miles per hour before now. 4. I am used to riding pretty much my own course, not having someone make unexpected turns and changing the pre-discussed route.  5. The group speed varies much more than I am used to.

Alll of that being said, it was nice to meet new folks and the ride was fun.  I ended up pulling most of the way because evidently I make a big wind shadow to draft in.   Who is racing this weekend?

  • It is interesting to hear about your group ride. I too have many similar stories. This year was my first year to ever really ride in a group and I was skeptical about doing it. The first few rides went fine but like you said, many people need to stop multiple times on even a relatively short ride. It is my belief that too many people use group rides for the social aspect and never really use them to improve their performance. There are exceptions but in general this is my observation.

Luckily I finally started riding with others who actually have bought the EN training plans and used them for years. We spread out to make sure there is minimal drafting and try to get our intervals in. Most other people don't understand why we do this but we all are in agreement we would rather get our workout in for the day. Explaining to people the workouts and how we feel it is important is a whole other story. I'm new to EN but really enjoy the philosophy here and plan on sticking with making sure I get my workout in every weekend. Sometimes this means riding my workout hard on Saturday then doing an "easy" group ride on Sunday.
  • @Roddy - In following the forums, it seems that individual training with the occasional group ride for fun is kind of the norm. You seem to have a particularly advantageous situation.
  • Big shout out to Tim Cronk who is one of the poster-boys for the SC forum. Nice overall win at his Olympic over the weekend. Strong stuff Tim! Great motivation for the rest of us.

Swim this PM and then Hill Repeats. Woo Hoo!
  • Rain on deck for tomorrow, so I did Tuesday's wko tonight. I misread the bike and ended up doing a TT even though I am not a power athlete. It was a great ride and confidence booster. I did the brick too. PF is good, really good. I dialed back the run, so as not to re-injure myself. Yahoooooo! Happy Monday everyone!
  • @ Tim Congratulations!!!!!!!!!
  • run low on time this AM at the pool so I ended up doing a 1000 TT, still slow but not quite as slow. didn't get a chance to download my garmin so I don't have my absolute slowness measurement to share Just yet but will look at that tonight.

My wife is going out of town the 3rd week of July so it may be big training week for me coming up. (It seems like I recall spending my Spare time differently back in the day).

Maybe my Powertap will be  here by then. Woo Hoo!

  • OK, so I am in the Get faster plan and the Bike for yesterday was 6 x 1.5 min Z5. I ended up on the trainer this AM due to time and I pulled up on of the other EN workouts with 6 short intervals from the OS since the Get faster workouts are not in there. It was not until I was at 1 1/2 min into the first interval that I realized that it had 6 x 2 min Z 5 intervals. That was a long extra 3 min. ouch.

Oh yeah, the issue I was having with Garmin seems better. It turns out that if you put the 2025 batteries in instead of the 2032 batteries, they fit fine but do NOT work correctly. Lesson : double check the battery before replacing with one that looks similar.

UPS says my powertap will arrive today. No, I'm not excited, why do you ask?
  • Nice job Ralph. 6x2 @Z5 sounds brutal.

Yesterday, I jogged for about 30 minutes and did a mixture of short Z4 and Z5 work on the bike. I'm glad this week is taper as I am feeling pretty tired at the moment.

  • Crap! I think I maybe in run jail. My right hip is sooo sore. It's starting to bother me when I walk. There's a sore spot on the top of my right pelvic crest that is so sore I can't touch it. I took last week off of all training and just goofed off. It seems worse than before.

I'm taking NSAIDS, stretching, ROM work, and rolling. I think it might be from over striding when I run. I have a strength difference between my right and left leg since my back injury. It's not much about 10 pounds but.....   I'm trying to increase my cadence and shorten my stride a little but then my speed decreases too. I guess nothings free. Needless to say I not running today. Sorry Coach P!

When I was in the pool last night ,cooling down, I was doing the butterfly kick. WOW! That got my attention. It felt like everything around my right hip joint was irritated and sore. The butterfly kick felt good. The soreness was better after. Think I might go for a quick kick workout today too.

I don't feel that total rest is the answer because when I took last week off, now feels worse. So I think i'm going to shorten my run. Increase kick work during the swim, continue with what i'm doing. But be careful of the ride. Don't want to over fatigue. May not do bricks for awhile. We'll see.

Anything else guys???? Thank you ahead of time.

  • cousin Jackie, the pigeon stretch is useful for greater trochanteric type issues. stretching is important. rest and ice. hope you feel better soon

my interval run workout was hard today. hard to get out of bed, hard to go the whole hour and the intervals felt really hard. but I hit my paces. Did I mention it was hot ? probably a bad Idea to do interval bike Z5 and interval run on back to back days anyway.
  • Well, just returned from my doc. Shot in the hip and appointment for PT this afternoon. My PT is a running coach so hopefully he can help me with what ever is contributing to this chronic problem. Official dx IT band friction syndrome.

  • @Jacklyn sorry to hear. Ouch

I just returned from a week vacation in Jacksonville Beach, FL. Did some running and one OWS in the Atlantic. It's been a while since I've been in salt water and a longer time since I had to deal with that amount of heat and humidity. No biking. Nice to be back in 70 degree weather.

This weekend I'm going to Chicago for the ITU World Triathlon Series Race. I'm in the Sprint which is Sunday at 11:30 AM. This will be a very competitive race - just hope the week in FL didn't totally mess me up. We'll see.

The Elite Women race on Saturday midday and the Men on Sunday late afternoon. Might be fun to watch. The course is Multi loop for the bike and run so it's easy to be a spectator.

I put my new Flo 90 on the back of El Rojo Diablo yesterday ... should be faster ... right?

  • Quick report on my Pacific Crest Olympic race today. Full report will be later. It did not go to plan at all. I have been dealing with a running injury and thought the swim and bike would be ok, with a struggle of a run. But, I struggled with my swimming in the choppiness of the group and felt short of breath for much of it. The first lap was rough going. I think due to the cold water and the elevation. I also swam over a mile according to the Garmin vs the 0.9 mile I was supposed to.

Went out a bit too hard on the bike (trying to hold 95% FTP for 1.5 hours is not realistic), the road was very rough for 25 of the 28 miles, got a flat 0.5 miles from the end of the bike, then when I got off the bike to find myself crippled from the butt down. I could not walk or move my legs or bend over for about 8 minutes. It seems some bike seat nerve pinching issue was going on but I never noticed it until I got off. I have never been closer to a DNF. The guy in the van asked me twice if I wanted to quit and I said no twice. Eventually I could walk and made it to T2, had the slowest transition ever and started walking out of T2. Slowly progressed from shuffling and walking to running quite well by the finish.

Tough day, but pleased I was able to hang in there and finish.

  • @ David - Tough Race but way to hand in there. Use the tough races to figure out how to avoid the same problems next time (then you find out new challenges). Good Stuff!
