Kortney Ringel's Macro Thread
Coach Rich:
I am coming off of racing Eagleman a couple of weeks ago. I've been feeling so good and really feel on a roll with training... After talking to a couple of people about IM Maryland (September 20), I am thinking about doing that race this year since there are still slots, I am very familiar with the area, having raced Eagleman 4 times, and it is relatively local for me.
The only dilemma I have is that I haven't really planned my summer around the possibility of doing this race, and my family has a long vacation coming up. We'll be road-tripping from DC to Minneapolis to visit family, and will be away for nearly 2 weeks. (I would be in IM Weeks 9-10 over our trip) So, I guess I am wondering what to do as far as altering the plan to be more manageable on vacation? Running is the easy part, and I can bring my bike, but the long rides are going to be challenging with the 4th of July weekend, etc. Swimming will be tough but not impossible.
Or, is this going to be too big of a dent into the training to make doing this race a smart thing? It would be my first IM. I'm also torn between racing this race or waiting to sign up to do IM Wisconsin in 2015.
Thanks so much - I would appreciate any advice you can give me!

You're in good HIM shape so that's a huge plus, you just need to keep the ball rolling. I have no real coach-ey coach-ey concerns about those ~2wks of messy training, with regards to it's effect on IMMD. It is what it is and is sounds like a cool family road trip. Just run, frequently, and do what you can with the bike. If you're driving, do you have opportunities to have your family give you a 2hr head start on the bike and they roll you up? I've done that many times, works well.
The bigger question is if the timing of the race works for you, given work, family, and lifestyle calendars.
Thanks for the advice.
Yeah, just make sure you do the elementary school math problem exercise: Kortney leaves at time x, averages y mph. Family averages z mph. What time must family leave so they meet Kortney after X miles and before B, where B = Bonk.
Then set an alarm for your driver for that wheels up team so they no shit get rolling. You don't want them to be loosey goosey with the start time = you riding an hour longer than you planned. Ask me how I know
